Do Americans consider being late rude?

To be fair we weren't invited till after the party started.
Regarding an invitation, Grandpa wasn't happy with what was happening in Europe in WWI, the US wasn't involved, so he went to Canada and joined the CEF and went to France. You don't always need an invite.

It’s sort of an individual thing with many people, IMHO.

Personally, I think being late is rude. I’d rather be 10 minutes early, than 1 minute late. But, that’s just me. LOL

For most it is how they were brought up, some see being really late as a sign of their importance, as for this sissy it has always been considered rude. I was once toll by a retaliative that "if you are not 5 minutes early don't bother showing up at all". Its like anything else, if you agree on it then you stick by it.

I'm of the older generation. I was taught to always be punctual. I made sure to leave early enough in case something came up like a wreck or flat tire. I always expected my dates to be on time too. There is nothing ruder than walking in on a performance late, drawing attention to yourself and away from the performers. I told one girl I was dating if she tried her grandstanding once more, I would leave. I told her that included all performances, movies or dinner dates.

I’ve noticed it depends a lot on personality. I like to be a few minutes early. Partly out of respect to who I’m meeting with and because I’m an anxious person.

But noticing people who are not just late for everything, but all the time:

They don’t seem hurried by anything.
Often it’s time management skills. If you’ve ever walked through with them how early you have to leave to make something on time, it doesn’t seem to make a dent.
Or they get distracted trying to cram in one more task.
There are a few who are just disrespectful…they don’t get many chances.
