I'm curious.

What dodgy medical procedures have been carried out from the non-sterile, yet comfortable setting of your home?

I just got a tick off the area of skin next to my dad's belly button with a burning cigarette.

A while back my mum got a gout-related lump on the side of one of her toes. She'd been to the doctor once about it, and he just lanced it open and squeezed all the pus out. So I repeated the procedure for her when she was watching Midsummer Murders on the TV. Apparently I did a much better job than the doctor, too.

When I was about 14 my mum pulled one of my teeth. It was a back one and she ended up having to use a pair of pliers from the toolbox.

So does this kind of thing go on in homes across the length and breadth of the world, or do I just come from a family of freaks?

freak family.

The most I ever do is use a sterilised needle to lance blisters or really nasty spots :p

My future father in law tatooed his own name on his arm when he was a teenager - does that count?

I dunnow if it counts or not, but it's a cool story! How did he do it?

I had to admit defeat when my dad cut the top off his finger, though. I didn't know quite what to do about that - especially as I couldn't find the missing part anywhere on the grass outside. My money's on one of the blackbirds that was hovering nearby.

I haven't progressed to stitches... yet

I'm just waiting now for someone to come up with some kind of moral lecture about why this is wrong and dangerous and all the rest...

I don't care, though. It's fun, and it beats getting MRSA. :catroar:

Who's for open heart surgery while I'm in the mood? ;)

I pushed a friend's finger back into the socket when it came out during a game of netball. She screamed a bit, but it went back in quite easily.

needle, bottle of ink, y'know, the usual.

... So how do you do it? Do you dip the needle in ink and then stab yourself with it, or what?

I think you stab yourself with it, then rub the ink in.
Want me to ask him next time I see him?

No... the design I want is too complicated for that. Plus it involves lots of different colours. Plus I'd be worried about giving myself blood poisoning with the wrong ink.

You see, despite everything, I'm not that reckless

Nah your not a freak family. I've bandaged, lanced, scraped and helped pull teeth of loads of family members.

My dads done the plier thing on some of my teeth when I was little as well as my mom tying string to the door and slamming it to get another pulled. (I really didnt like peoples fingers in my mouth and i hated dentists even more.)

There was always the freacky tick removals with cigarettes, matches, hot needles or whatever method was said to be the best at the time.

My mom removed my stitches after my surgeries for several years.

W don't go to the doctors unless we really need to in my family.

Dad cut a skin tag thing off the back of his neck once -mum nearly killed him for doing it though.

Mum's pulled a flick knife out of the top of my sisters head and a sewing machine needle out of my finger (it went right through th nail and out the otherside, I panicked and pulled my finger out, breaking the needle) she had to do it with her teeth. Erm, I won't go to a docs with a twisted ankle, I'll deal with it myself (t's happened so often, I know the routine) and if there's a wird rash or spot or patch of dry skin on a family members body we show mum first. She's a Holistic therapist and she knows all kinds of natural remedies for things.

Lavender oil rules btw.

:D

That's class, EL! :D

I swear by tea tree oil for most things. I'll have to try lavendar oil.

It is fantastic for rashes and infected cuts and such -it's very gentle. You can put it in a plain cream base too if you like. (we do that when putting it on Beth) oh and it helps you sleep if you're having an insomniac moment :)

You get plain cream and pour the lavendar oil in?

I might try it tonight. I've had a couple of nights of sleeplessness.

Btw - welcome to the freak club, EL  ;)

Or just drip a couple of drops of lavender oil onto a piece of kitchen roll and slip it under your pillow if you're using it just to help you sleep :)

It works like a charm on my daughter and I find it helpful, too.

Thanks Scheh, I'm a freak and proud of it :D

*shudders* Hives I tell ya, hives! Itching sneezing watery eyes...*cringes* lavender is evil

My son hated it when his baby teeth started to get loose and wobble, other kids play and worry their loose teeth into falling out, my son would just grab the tooth and yank it out.

He just didn't seem to understand that when a tooth isn't really ready to fall out, you can't just yank it - there was always so much blood. I was really pleased when the last of his baby teeth came out. :)

My Mom also cut off a skin tag from her neck, it was huge and used to catch on collars and necklaces so one day she grabbed the scissors and cut it off - again so much blood, but it healed.
