I think it is a matter of conscience and public relations. "OK, we harvest a few whales, but look at the good job we are doing with albatrosses!"

I propose giving Greenpeace a couple of old destroyers. Bush could claim environmental friendliness and the whales would have defenders that could take on those whaling ships. Rainbow Warrior indeed.

Alternatively, if you're afraid to give them real guns to play with, you could just give them a handful of icebreakers, they could ram the whaling ships with little damage to themselves.

The Japanese are convinced that eating whale will enhance their virility, and they will not stop for any reason until they are forced to.

The Japanese have a significant minority who are conservationists and support wildlife projects. They also have people who will kill anything anywhere to make a fast buck.

That makes the Japanese just as normal as the people of most countries.

Watched a really funny interview with Sir Paul McCartney and his wife Heather(?) against the Newfoundland Premier recently. They were (well, okay so he sat back and she answered) able to push emotional buttons on the seal issue (there is rarely clubbing anymore) and yet seemed to be at a blank in answering the Premiers questions about why they weren't fighting for cows - lol.

I think any extreme group has their thing in mind, and similar to religion, it's very hard to get people to see their own theoretical contradiitons when their minds are polluted by vanity.
