Disappearing votes?

Looks like there was a sweep.

Wrong Prescription for Mom lost about 200 votes and the score went from 3.84 to 4.04.

There may be for new stories. I haven't published since late February, and I've seen no sweeps with any of my stories and another day of a slight drop in the mean story score.

April Fool's results were supposed to be today, so that's probably why there's a step up in sweeps, in addition to the other reasons.

I haven't seen changes in my catalog, but the contest scores are changing. I don't know how often the bio pages are updated (that's where I get the scores), but they have been updated at least a couple times today. The median score has gone from 4.26 to 4.33 in the last update, and there were twelve stories with scores of 4.50 or more, compared to 9 earlier this morning.

I’m pretty sure Shakespeare misquoted the Shakespeares he sometimes stole from, so it’s morally fine.

Well, Shakespeare created over 1,700 words that are still used in our general language/lexicon today. So he is given a pass on misquoting.

You get to be the official scorekeeper on this. I lost hope yesterday and went to sleep before the final scores were in, and I suppose now they’re something else again so maybe I won’t bother gathering them anymore. Plus mine didn’t even make it hot, even after the sweeps, so that’s kind of disappointing.

All but one of my 15 (!) stories have had their votes restored, but the highest scoring ones are down and I see no improvement in the ongoing trolling.

Also, the new story page isn't working on my iPad pro. I can't vote, text overlaps, and I can only get to the next chapter by going back to the author's list of works.

Mine seem to have settled down and most of the lost votes restored. There has been a little bit of movement in my average ratings, but not enough to affect any red H stories either way.

Still hoping against hope that the missing views are restored for my story "How Can I Persuade You". It was released the same morning as the new story page in mid March and missed the whole first weekend's views and more as a result.

It is around the 3,700 mark having gone to just under 1,000 in the first two hours, so I am down a lot. The ratings and favourites received would put it around the 30k mark when compared to my other stories with same same levels.

Be nice to see a fix for that as I have a story almost ready for the "On the Job" event which goes live in a couple of weeks, and hope the same thing will not happen there.

My stories have mostly stayed the same over the last fortnight when I lost some votes and a lot of stars on three stories in particular.

Today three different stories have risen in stars if not votes, one being my April Fool story which has doubled from 100 to 200 votes and risen 0.5. I suspect sweeping is ongoing...

Sorry about the issue.

I am testing on an iPad Pro with the latest Safari right now, can you let me know what browser you are using? I can't replicate the issue, but there are a lot of variables, so any additional info would be appreciated.

Thank you! :D

I use a Mac and run either Firefox or Safari. I want to give a tip of the hat and a Standing O to the job you folks have been doing. All of my problems in checking in, getting into any categories, my home page, and my works has disappeared and for me the site is now cooking with gas.

A job well done.

Based on what’s been stated during the past few weeks, lower ratings may have causes other than just issues with the site’s vote losses and recovery efforts. The slow loading of site pages a few days ago was attributed to an influx of new readers (or maybe existing readers becoming more active, or something else external to the site’s operation). If so, the new readers may be harder to please than existing Lit readers. So authors may now be playing to a tougher room.

The issue may not have been resolved. Today one of my stories lost three votes, and another lost two. All of the lost votes are 5*s. There had been no voting or other acti ity on these stories for more than a month.

Well, I lost a bunch of votes today on various stories and also gained two "favorites" out-of-the-blue on two stories that are over 4 months old.

One of my stories in particular has hovered between 296 and 307, most often 304 and 305 since last summer when people started observing the current behavior on a steady and widespread basis. The view count grows slowly and steadily and a comment occasionally (one or two a year) trickles in.

To me, It seems like the recent flurry of votes disappearing was a separate event to the long term one.

Manu visited the board and unless I missed other posts chose to talk about one post about iPad screen formatting, not lots and lots posts about votes. Maybe that’s the secret to attention? Let me try. “Manu, we’re all on iPads and our vote counts won’t move. “ (Maybe it’ll work?)

I'm not confident that the problem is fixed.

I've notice a couple of vote drops, but only a couple. I had thought it was one of the routine sweeps the site does.

I see no evidence that the mass disappearance of votes that plagued the Site a month ago is continuing. Of my 36 stories, only one dropped in votes in the last two days. The rest saw increases or no change.

My mean story score has continued to drop slowly over the last few weeks. It seems like new votes are lower, on average, than they used to be.

I think the sweeps are cutting deeper. My top ten stories are mostly older - they've all changed their ranking between .01 and .05 (not much in the grand scheme of things) and maybe lost a vote or two (again, not much). It's pretty clear to me (having watched sweeps since they started) that the site has somehow tightened its vote validation criteria recently, and has purged a bunch of votes.

What amuses me is the number of people who are assuming their votes were always legit and want them all "restored". Probably not.

If the vote losses are all from legitimate sweeps, then so be it. If the system is indeed functioning exactly as it should, then I’d join in a collective sigh of relief and have no further concerns about submitting new stories, knowing that the ratings they get would arise from true votes. At this stage, however, I’m not confident about the system’s functioning.

Right.

People assume that all the 5s are legit and the 1s are not.

But there's no reason at all, objectively, to believe that's true. A 1 vote can be perfectly legitimate.

We've all been spoiled by a system that is skewed because of the nature of the voting system and the role of the 4.5/red H score, which alters voting behavior. It's possible there's been an influx of new voters that are less familiar with, and perhaps less influenced by, that system.

As long as any change in scoring affects all of us, then there is, objectively speaking, no problem.

If the scoring stays low, then it will be very difficult for new stories -- no matter how good they are -- to break into the toplists. I see that as a problem.

I understand your point, Simon, but am not sure I agree. At the most basic level, who will continue wading through a story they think is dreadful, keep reading through to the very end, when the easy option is to simply cut and go to another? I suppose some people do so legitimately, but less so than those who are enjoying a tale.

Then we get into the question of ‘inflating-fives’, but that’s another issue. I’m only speaking of legitimate votes.

My 2 kopeks, anyway.
