DALLAS – The dirtiest tricks are always saved until the very end.
Throughout Texas last night and today, households received calls from a group identifying themselves as the gay and lesbian community of Texas saying to vote for Ron Kirk because he is working hard to legalize same-sex marriages and supports gay adoptions. The caller then asks voters to call Ron Kirk and thank him for his support.
“It seems that some have stooped to the very lowest level in the final hours of this campaign. They have deliberately lied about the positions of Ron Kirk,” said Kirk campaign spokesman Robert Gibbs. “It is obvious that these completely false calls are to benefit John Cornyn’s campaign. John Cornyn knows Ron Kirk does not support same sex marriages or gay adoptions. He should apologize to the voters of Texas for spreading this misinformation, and should also call on his allies to stop these calls immediately.”
Ron Kirk has never supported same sex marriage or gay adoptions. John Cornyn and his allies know that.
Similar calls were done in Florida yesterday but stopped when Governor Jeb Bush ordered the calls to cease. “Thousands of likely Democratic and independent voters received election-eve phone calls from a Republican firm claiming that Gov. Jeb Bush is the only candidate for governor who supports '’traditional'' families, suggesting that Democratic challenger Bill McBride supports gay marriages.” [Miami Herald, 11/05/02]
“Jeb Bush, flying around the state Monday aboard the private Boeing 737 owned by South Florida billionaire Wayne Huizenga to lead get-out-the-vote rallies, heard about the calls from reporters and immediately ordered that the calls cease.” [Miami Herald, 11/05/02]
The calls are also similar to ones done in the Democratic primary to hurt the campaign of Ron Kirk.
“Automated phone calls smearing Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Ron Kirk have gone to thousands of Texas Democrats in a last-hour campaign before today's election that smacks of Republican ‘dirty tricks,’” wrote the El Paso Times. [El Paso Times, 4/9/02].
The call in April said “’Victor Morales is a schoolteacher who has fought against the special interests and Big Tobacco. The Austin bosses know Victor Morales won't toe their line.” [El Paso Times, 4/9/02].
