Nope. I wore green, which was a stretch because I had a job interview today. I found an atrocious green herringbone blazer in the back of my closet, and opted to go with a teal and green flecked boucle one instead - but it still had green in it.

Where I grew up, "pinched" meant that you were stopped by the police, often for something like speeding. And no, I wasn't.

Neither does most of Ireland. It's a BFD there that leaves them wondering what's wrong with their US based emigres.

Pinching is an Irish-American thing where children of emigres were supposedly encouraged to participate in St.Patrick celebrations by wearing green lest they be pinched by fairies or something. I also heard that folks would pinch one another for not conforming - the green of the bruise would ensure at least a little green on ya.
So yeah. We're a little crazy, and most of us were brought up with the fear of GAHD instilled in us through threats by our parents.
St. Patricks Day is just fun - at least that's the way it was presented to me. If I was catholic and religious it might mean even more so.
So - not mandatory, but just a fun thing to do. My grandfather always said " If you're Irish you don't need to prove it by wearing green." So whatever.

That's why I love it so much. It isn't as stressful as christmas or thanksgiving or easter - you don't have to do anything but wear green and pinch the non-green wearers.

I used to tell people when I was a kid that I was Irish, I didnt have to wear green.
Growing up, it wasnt that big a deal, I was Irish descent, but more hillbilly than anything else.. we were protestant, not Catholic, so saints were kinda.. eh..
But, since becoming pagan and delving into my Irish past in that manner, I found I just couldnt "celebrate" a man who was responsible for the deaths of many druids in the name of religion. Nor do I celebrate the stereotypical idea of the drunk Irishman.
Doesnt mean I want to stop anyone else's fun, it's just something I don't do

I totally respect that Fi, and you're right.
I wasn't raised Catholic either (Irish grandparents were though) so it's more of a light-hearted cultural thing for me, and seeing as so much culture gets lost (IE I've only really retained how to make a boiled dinner and various gaelic swear words), I don't see a problem with playing along if all I'm doing is wearing green.
Gracie wears green and pinches folks. Today just makes her feel like she can excuse it.

If I didn't celebrate holidays cause I didn't like the original basis, I wouldn't celebrate anything.
Christmas - Jesus was born in the spring. Christmas was originally the winter solstice. I'm a Christian - I choose to celebrate Jesus' birthday instead of winter solstice.
Easter. Huh - supposedly the day Jesus was raised from the dead, and yet we have the easter bunny and eggs. Bull - it's another pagan holiday. I'm not pagan. but i choose to see the eggs as a sign of the new life I have in Jesus. *shrugs* Holidays are what you make of them. I'm not catholic - I don't do the whole saints thing. I still choose to celebrate st. patty's day because it's fun. I could care less about the origins.

Well, as stated, it's my favorite holiday. I love the irreverence of it. And I love pinching. Unfortunately the kids are on to me. They wore green jammies to bed, so I didn't get them today. *pouts* And K wore green underwear to bed. Big ole meanie, ruins all my fun.
