I look into the mirror of mist, watching as the mist
within clears and revealing the face of a dutiful lady
kneeling before her god’s alter, fretfully praying for
something. I smile as the mist enfolds her image
before clearing again showing a small village with a
temple in the center.

“Farinera” says a voice in my mind “That is were you
will find her.” I smile evilly as I turn from the
mirror letting the mist cloud its surface once again.
I walk quickly and gracefully out of my viewing room
and down a dark hall, dimly lit by torches at ether
side. I move with an unnatural speed and grace as I
move threw the labyrinth of stairs and halls until I
come out at my courtroom.

I look out over the creatures assembled before me,
their eyes moving as one to see their dark lord. “I
found the one…” I pause as my dark eyes move over the
throng of night creatures. “The one that will bring me
power! That will secure my rule over the world.” I
laugh as the creatures hoot and howl in approval,
waving their fists in the air. Some dark fairies buzz
up and circle above our heads, sending off angry red
sparks and casting a shadow over the court. The
goblins scamper underneath the hoofed feet of the
ogres and orcs. The dark elves applaud, subdued not
to pleased about being here but know that I was too
powerful to ignore or they risk my anger.

Dark shadows shifting along the walls, demons popping
in and out clapping and jeering. I raze my hand high,
the blood red ruby of my ring glinting evilly as the
room quiets and all eyes turn to me once again. “She
is in Farinera awaiting me.” I see a few eyes glinting
with evil intent at the word ‘she’.

I glare at them causing them to flinch back. “You will
go to this village and surround it, do not make your
presence known, and DO NOT attempt to even look at the
girl wrong or I will skin you alive and never let you
die.” I snarl the last my threat true and punctuated
by the wails of the ones I did this to and hung out by
their thumbs on the cliffs over head.

My hard gaze moves over the creatures never faltering
and always cold as stone. I tilt my head slightly as I
hear a leathery beet of wings and then a loud roar
from out side. I smile evilly at my pride, my greatest
achievement and proof of power. The black dragon soars
over head, the one that legend had said could never be
captured or tamed. I chuckle softly he is mine now,
forever. I absently pat a dark ruby hanging from a
gold necklace around my neck. It contains the dragon’s
soul, trapped forever and giving me complete control
over it.

I look back at the creatures of my court, smiling at
the fear I see in their faces including those of the
arrogant dark elves. “Once I have the girl there will
be nothing to stand in my way.” I say softly in a
deadly voice. “Now go seek the village until I’m ready
to collect her.” With that I turn and walk into the
darkness of my inner sanctum, where none go
voluntarily and those that came within were never the
same again.

The creatures of the dark nameless lord file from his
dark keep under the smoking volcano, deep in the black
desert. They spread out over the lands searching for
the village with the girl. Staying in the shadows, but
still noticed by kings of the meager races. They don’t
know what caused this out flowing of so many dark
creatures from the dreaded desert. It’s been many
generations since so many came forth. Fear caused the
humans to flee into their homes, bolting and locking
all doors and windows. Something bad was happening,
something ungodly. They wanted no part of it, the
humans knew this meant danger, grave danger to all
living things.

I rise from the last thoughts of my silent prayer, knees slightly sore from kneeling so long. As I smooth the length of skirt below my waist, I look around at the empty temple. It had been so long since religion was embraced, and so long since something good had happened, that most people had begun to forget.

The town was set up to support a small community, nothing more. That meant that people worked harder than they should have in order to support the few children that survived from infancy to adulthood. It hadn’t always been this way, but it had been as long as I could remember. My father often spoke of times when water wasn’t scarce, when children were plentiful and no one begged for food. I kept her eyes lowered as she walked down the street, for I was still unmarried. Unmarried at the age of 23 was unthinkable here. However, most townspeople had forgiven me because of the lack of suitors. And for my skill in healing.

Since childhood, no one had died when I was near. Something about me always seemed to help save people. One time I merely touched a coughing man on his deathbed and within days he was up and walking at the age of 96. Another time, a child had fallen out of a tall tree, puncturing his lung. The townspeople brought the child to me, and seemingly just by tending the wound, the line of blood dripping down his chin disappeared slowly. Townspeople began to whisper of witchcraft, but dared not question me in public, for fear of my father’s wrath. My father, Erik Zanloft, was a drunk, and a cruel drunk at that, often getting into barroom brawls, but he never raised a hand to me nor spoke a foul word. As far as I knew, the townspeople never spoke ill of me in front of him because he would pummel them. Most recently, Thom Perrith, too inebriated to stay sensible, commented that I looked like I was “ready for a good bedding, wedding or not. That long hair, tall frame, those tits, that ass—I could see using her long brown hair as a bridle and riding that creamy wench all night”—Thom wasn’t seen for three weeks, and when he emerged he was still sporting fading bruises and a crushed nose. That was only after I had gone to tend Thom when my father passed out at home that night.

As I near home, I feel the tinge of something dark on the air. I look around, peering from corner to corner, into every shadow, but see nothing. I hurried home, entering and shutting the door behind me, pulling the wood lever down to seal myself inside.

“What’s wrong, Audrina?” my father slurs.

“Nothing,” I say, unwilling to open the door again. “The air is just a bit darker than normal.”

“Maybe there’ll be a shower,” my father says, leaning his head against his arm, eyes red-spiked. "We could use it."

“Maybe—” I agree. However, my skin begins to crawl and I know that’s not the case. Something is coming, and my body is tingling in fear.

The dark lord

I stand looking out the large windows that lead out to a dark courtyard. I tilt my head slightly as I feel one of my demons slip out of a shadow bowing deeply waiting for me to ignolag him. My mind goes to the girl in the village wondering what the best way to harness her power.

I turn my head looking at the dark demon its eyes down cast not daring to look at me with out permion. “So what do you have for me?” I say in a deceptively soft voice. The demon looks up at me not meeting my eyes.

“We found the village my lord. The area around it is sucer awaiting your plesher.” He says in a respectful tone looking back down at the floor waiting for my orders.

“Good be shear no one messes with her until I get there.” I say softly an evil grin coming to my lips as my eyes glint with anticipation.

I turn my head back to the windows as my hand moves to the dark ruby at my neck. I concentrate on it chuckling as a rore erupts from the mountain over head. I look up seeing a jet of flames erupting from the cave mouth at the mountains peak. Then threw the flames the dragon bursts folding its enormous wings as it falls like a stone tordes the ground. At the last possible moment the wings snap open catching the air with a thunderous snap holding its fall. The wings flutter gently as the large fears dragon lands easily on its cloud feet.

I move to a door made out of some odd black wood that seems to absorb light. I step threw moving to the dragon as it’s baleful eyes stare at me rage at being dommend like this and knowing there is nothing it can do to stop it. I just look at him until he kneels down on his front legs. I step up on to its large muscular leg it’s glossy black skals smoth and hard as steal. I push my self up in an easy flowed movement settling my self between two large spines.

Then with a powerful serge the dragon leaps in to the air its lathery wings spreading and moving in powerful swoops casing use to rise up in to the night’s sky. I point the dragon in to correct direction and we fly tords the village to the one that I seek the one with the power.

After my father began to snore, I got antsy. Ouside, there was a whole world of things that I could be doing: searching for wild berries, searching for mushrooms, gathering sticks, laying gazing at stars, or playing with the animals. I liked listening to them scurry in the woods. Although it was night, and I knew better, I unbarred the door to the cabin and went outside, inhaling deeply.

I imagined that the scent of newly born dew gifted the air, and jasmine hinted at places far more exotic than here. Instead, my skin felt dryer than a moment ago, and I licked my lips from the lack of humidity. I walked slowly down the path away from the cabin, keeping it in sight but far enough to reach a line of tall rocks guarding the secrets of the land behind it. I'd often been tempted to climb the rocks, but had never had the nerve before. They were trecherous and if I fell, I would likely break my neck.

For some reason tonight seemed different. My body ached to climb almost as much as my heart ached to leave this poor, provincial town. I looked up, and before I knew it my hand found grasp in a section of the rock. I pulled myself further and further, skirts tangling around my feet, but never causing me to slip. My hands began to ache as I neared the top. Something urged me on, and it was like I was dreaming.

Above, the sky that was normally brilliant with stars was growing dimmer. I didn't notice as I climbed higher, hands now bruised and aching. As I pulled myself to a small plateau and saw the first glimpse of what lay behind the rock wall, I gasped, my dirty hand flying to cover my mouth to stifle a yelp of surprise. My eyes widened, taking the scene before me in. I looked down to where I had began and realized that getting down would be much more difficult than climbing up had been. I was trapped, and before me lay something I never thought to see.
