Depression and Bipolar Support

I've suffered with Depression since my son was 3 months old............he's now 9 yrs old (and bipolar w/ODD)....I'm glad to see a place for support
jaded... It's nice to see you, even if it is in a place where the topic isn't so pleasant...

I started this thread after a recent bout where my meds just weren't working... I was strung right out, really... They've now been adjusted, and seem to be working...

Nine years of chronic depression... Have you sought some help? I'm not one to really push meds unless they're really necessary, but that long a time... It might be something to think about...

Has your son been medicated? That's a sensitive area - what works for adults, in terms of meds, often just makes things worse for kids...

Just know that this thread is intended to be a place to unload, talk to people, even if it's only me (many people are afraid to discuss this topic), and receive some support, even it only amounts to an open ear to bend...

Off and on, right now off because I don't have insurance or the extra cash to get help. Yes, he's medicated......and what he's on seems to work for him.

May I ask what meds he's on? Just a curiosity thing... I'm on a major cocktail right now - Depakote (2000 mg), Lithium (1000 mg), and Seroquel (100 mg)... But I'm pretty severly bipolar, too...

Oh, man... Seizure disorder, too... That poor kid...

I have mixed feelings about kids and meds... On one hand, you want them to be able to at least try to live a normal life, but on the other, so many meds... It sucks at such a young age...

I hope he finds a good balance...

Yep I know...............nothing I can really do but deal with it the best I can.
That's all any of us can do, Sweetie...

But it helps to know there are people who can relate, and just listen if you need to vent... Hope you know that this thread is for that...

not sure how much i want to share out in the open like this but i am on meds for depression and can i just say that the one thing that irritates me the most is when someone asks me "what's wrong?" and I simply can't answer them

and then when things do appear, as they are right now in my personal life, it seems to rear its ugly head as if it's a monster feeding on the negativity

thank you BW for this thread

I suspect that depression is a lot more common than those of us who are dealing with it would believe. I have found that knowing some folks that have been through the same thing helps me deal with my my "black dog" as Winston Churchill so aptly put it.
Great Thread!

You sure picked the right time to bump up this thread. I understand about when asked what's wrong. You can't answer because it's not just one thing.

I've been really down for about a week now. Did you ever get to the point when you felt like you'd had it.....with everything? I keep putting of going to the doctor.

Get to the Doctor!!

I suspect if we all hang together, it will be helpful for the lot of us.

Yes, I do know what it's like to lose all hope. It's not healthy! Pls go to the doctor sweetie.

Ima, I don't know you well. But I've had a lot of experience with this - being bipolar gives you both extremes...

Please, Sweetie, get to the doctor and get some help with this. It could be just a minor "down time," but it could also be the beginning of a major depression, and that's a dangerous place to be.

Exercise as therapy for depression

Hi!
I thought I could make a little contribution from this week's news:

By Susan Brink, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
September 17, 2007
REGULAR exercise could help lift the cloud of major depression as effectively as an antidepressant, new research shows.

"A lot of people know from their own experience that when they exercise, they feel better," says James A. Blumenthal, a professor of psychology at Duke University and lead author of the study. But such anecdotes and gut feelings don't amount to clinical proof. So Blumenthal conducted a placebo-controlled clinical trial, the first time the gold standard of research has been used to compare exercise with antidepressants for treatment of major depression.

He sorted 202 patients into four groups. After 16 weeks, 47% of the people who took the antidepressant Zoloft improved. But some 45% of those who exercised in supervised groups improved, and 40% of those who exercised on their own improved, a statistically insignificant difference from the drug group result. About 30% of those in the placebo group improved, a finding consistent with the placebo effect.

Exercise, Blumenthal speculates, may increase endorphin or serotonin levels, so-called feel-good brain chemicals. The study was published in the September issue of the journal Psychosomatic Medicine.

This was the focus of my latest literotica story, so it was nice to see that the hard clinical evidence has improved!

Best wishes to all,

Thank you Curl...it's so true that exercise makes most of us feel better. I must start going to my classes again! I'm definitely in a funky dip right now.

The most fun I've had in the past several months was when I signed up for what was billed as an "aerobics/weights" group fitness class. I was shocked and almost bailed out when it turned out to be Jazzercise, but it turned out to be enormous fun and the most enjoyable excuse to work out that I've had in a long time! (Developing a little bit of dance-coordination was a rewarding bonus.)

That's awesome. I think Jazzercise would be super fun. Don't think we have anything like that in my town (it's a small one) but how fun to be doing dance-like steps while exercising :rose:

My dr has changed my meds again....3rd time in 9 weeks....it seems like everything she has tried so far, starts another health risk...*fingers crossed* that we will get the right cocktail soon......i go back to see her in about 10 days
