i'm just wondering about something. i've been talking with a friend recently about Depo Provera. she's been taking the shot for awhile now and she says its killing her sex drive just about completely, is it supposed to do that? and if it is, is there anything she can do to increase her sex drive some?

I was on Depo Provera for about 2 years. I noticed some odd side effects, including the aforementioned decrease in sex drive. I never could find anything to help it, so I did the only reasonable thing - I stopped getting the shots and went back on the Pill. I suggest that your friend talk to her doctor.

I was on it for about a year once. I don't remember it having any effect on my sex life. However, please caution your friend that it can take up to a year after you go off of it to regain regular cycles and become fertile again.

I don't know, but it sounds to me, like that's the point of it all, the way to NOT have children, would be a lack of sex I suppose.

Just my very uneducated in this field guess though,

the lack of sex is a way to not have children, but if you're going to, you might as well do your best to prevent having them too. i dont ahve sex regularly and yet i'm still on the pill (OrthoCyclen), but it helps my body in other ways (hormones, cramps, general emotions, and some other stuff that i dont know about). i'm sure depo provera helps the body in some ways too (i dont know of any though). but i think having some form of birth control is better than none, dont you?

and i have told her i think she should talk to the doctor before she gets the next shot cuz i dont think that sounded right to me

I used Depo Vera for a year or so and didn't notice any difference in my sex drive (still a nympho), but it did have other side effects some good and some bad. I gained weight which took a lot of work to get rid off once I stopped having the injections (bad), my period stopped (very good) and it was about a year after before it actually stopped working (not so good if you are planning a family).

I was on Depo for a while. It did decrease my sex drive, but honestly nobody but me could tell. I also got pregnant while on it. I now have a 3 year old son thanks to depo. lol

That's one of the reasons my oldest daughter quit Depo Provera. The other was the weight gain she experienced.

Apparently, this is a fairly common side effect.

W&U...
I have no idea about the effects of Depo Provera on the sex drive, but my gynecologist advised against me going on it. she said that she would only really recommend it for women who had kids and didn't plan on having any more. She said that some women have problems conceiving when they went off of it.

I decided against going on it, because even though I am not sure if I ever want to have children, I don't want that decision being made for me.

My brothers girlfriend is on it. she's only 18, but the doctor said yes cause she already has 2 kids. the side affects she was warned of was, her period would eather stop (temperarily or permanently) or her period would be heavy and painful (temperarily or permanently) they told her nothing about what it would do to sex drive.. I've never asked cause i could care less how often my brother gets any lol. but so far after a year she has had no side affects (at least this was a conversation I over heard my mom and sister haveing.)

I have been on the shot twice at different points in my life and I noticed that instead of losing sex drive I actually had more. Perhaps it also had a part to do with no worries about pregnancy.

Unfortunatly I have discovered that I am either very fertile or they gave me bad shots as both times I was on it I became pregnant. Needless to say I am not on it anymore and would caution people about it as it is not as failsafe as cracked up to be.

The lack of a menstral cycle on the other hand is something I would give my eyeteeth for though <g>

Depo i dont trust... I know some people that it was great for and some other people that it was horrendousfor them.

If I was a woman I wouldnt take it.

A friend of mine is now on it and she has gained almost 50lbs. she hates it. She is having a real hard time taking off the weight

i was on depo for about a year. i gained 40 pounds in less than a month, had absolutely no sex drive, and was extremely depressed.

I talked to my new gyno when i went off of it, and he said these are fairly common side effects. also, after going off of it, i needed thyroid medication to get my body back to where i would stop gaining weight.

Other fun side effects my gyno warned me about... chronic yeast infections... irregular periods... severe cramping... all of these after going off the shot and being off of it more than 5 years.

i wouldn't recommend anyone ever take it.

I was on it for almost a year. And though I can't say that I had any loss of my sex drive. I certainly wasn't fond of the sporadic bleeding that took place. I bled more days than I didn't, and never knew when the bleeding was going to start. At that point, I would have much rather had a regular period.
I also found for me personally I was a lot more depressed and irritated!
I assume everyone's reactions to Depo are different. For me it was personal hell! I still wonder if part of the reason I had such a bad time of it, is because 9 months earlier I had a baby and my hormones were out of whack?
