Thinking of buying a new puter.........I have gateway Pentium 3 /350 now. Let me have your opinions of the above please. Thank YOu.:D

Is pentium 4 best for DVD-CDR/W, digital pics.;)

hmmmm

As far as dell or gateway I can`t answer because I built my own system. Personally I prefer P4 to celeron. Hope that is a start for you. Good luck with the new system. Later.

Supposedly one processor is better than the others for graphics, but I have no idea which one. If you are like me and 99% of all PC users, we probably couldn't tell the diference anyway.

I've used lots of different PC's in the past five years. Three or four were HP's, one was a Compaq (my least favorite) and several were Dell. The last two PC's I bought were Dell, and their service, quality, and tech support were excellent. At different times the keyboard and modem didn't work, and I received replacements by FedEx the next day. I wouldn't think of buying a PC from a retail store.

As far as cpu's go I prefer intel over amd, they consume less power and run cooler. I would recommend calling a local shop and having one built to suit your individual needs. With the Cd-R or DVD, go with individual units for each. I have a Plextor 16X10X40 cd-rw drive, Using it along with CloneCd I can burn thru just about any copy protection out there. PM me if you want more info on burners, or anything else I can help with about pc's

Also intel is getting ready to change from a socket 370 to a socket 423 so make sure your new motherboard will support the new chip style if you go with the P4

AMD XP for your processor...as fast as a P4 and half the price,
just make sure its cooled properly. Volcano II or Orb series

(AMD XP 1800+ @1553mhz will out perform P4 1800 @ 1800mhz)

Dell is the best "Big-name" manufacturer. DO NOT buy a Compaq (non-industry standard parts and very expensive to get replacements) Gateway --UGGGHH-- Say no more (Very poor support-all the drivers on their site are OLD 1998 etc and their support technicians dont know squat (Ask SweetCherry on that score)

HP...a good buy, top quality components, quality contruction & good support . (But I didnt say that) I personally dont like HP's
Ther case designs and silly little micro-switches make service a nightmare.

There are as many options available as there are users-everybody has different wants/needs etc.

Go to your local shop-tell them what you need/what its to be used for and they can guide you. I dont recommend "Big-Name" PC's. You dont get value for money. Go for a local manufacturer

Support your community instead of a global corporate.

If you need advice from a Certified Technician PM me...I dont bite (unless you ask nicely)

I dont like brand name stuff....Mines a homebuilt AMD T-bird 1330,
512 meg ram, Twin 20gb HDDs, 12/10/32 AOpen CD-RW and 64meg MX400 GeForce2 Vid card...it rocks (Quake 2 at 1024x768 190 fps {frames per second})

TY

Dell seems to win all the service awards. I have Gateway now and have had good service from them for 3 years......but it looks like you can get a better flat panel from Dell as well as dvd and cdr/w........thanks for the input.

:)

I know nothing about computers... put the 10pm news just said that a company just released a new processer that is 10xs as fast as any on the market .. (sorry, did not hear what company)

I have had a Gateway computer for almost two years, and I have had excellent results the entire time. I enjoyed having them "personalize" and preload the PC before it arrived.

Gateways? What's the saying....."When they're good, they're very very good, and when they're bad, they're horrid"?? I currently own my second Gateway PC. The first one was a *serious* piece of shit. Too many problems to list. Why did I buy another one? I'm not sure.....but I did, and have not had a single problem/issue with it in a year and a half. But Draco is right, DON'T try to call Gateway Tech Support......they're idiots! I dual-majored in college, one was Computer Science. And Tech Support repeatedly told me that I had no idea what I was talking about. IMO, Gateway's are not nearly as "user friendly" as some others, unless you are *very* computer literate.

It's simple. DELL and INTEL P4. Stick with the industry leaders and you will never be sorry. Many large corporations I know of use Dell exclusivly, because they are excellent out of the box and have great tech help. Intel has been an industry leader for years.
Now, if all you are going to use the computer for is to access Lit, you could go with less processor and save a lot of money. Remember that the once very expensive 1 Gig P4 is now an antique, and the near future will make todays hi tech items an antique soon also. There is no way to get the latest and greatest and get it set up before there is something faster, grander, and more exciting developed. Good luck

Why INTEL?

Why pay twice as much for a slower system?

Intel components are dearer, try Rambus RAM is three times the price of SDRam and there is not real gain in system speed.

Intel motherboards are dearer than AMD motherboards
Because of (until recently) all INTEL P4 boards only supported RDRam (Rambus).

A good combo would be AMD Duron 1000 and KT266 motherboard.
Cost effective and fast enuff as a surfboard/email/occasional gamer/CD-RW/DVD player.

And you wouldn't have to sell the first born to buy it.

INTEL demand you send them your first born before purchase..its the only way they'll honour service warranties. (JUST KIDDING)

Well, it dependx on what you use it for.

Do not buy a Celeron!!!!!!!!! A Celon is amogst the worst CPUs. I would go AMD.

I got a Pentium III 450 mHz, 64 MB RAM, 0GB Hard drive, 50x CD-ROM, and 8MB Video Card, a Aptiva brand Computer. Buy a custom made computer, not a premade brand name.

I am going to buld myself a Pentium 4 1.7gHz, 512 MB RAM, 12x DVD, Geforce 2 Video card. Thinking of a AMD insteed of a Pentium 4.
A 2gHz CPU here would cost me over $1000 just for the CPU chip.
