Deletion of negative comments

Since the public feedback portal came on line a little over a year ago, we authors have had the honor of being publicly eviserated where before any personal attacks on our manhood (or womanhood as the case may be) were suffered in the privacy of our own mailboxes.

I noticed a story that came out the other day that received a large number of vicious public responses. It was in the Loving Wives category and apparently the story's husband was of the unbelievably stupid wimp cuckold variety, so the author should have expected the LW Nazis to be in full attack mode. I say 'apparently' because I didn't read the story myself.

Today I saw several comments in the public feedback portal that the author had apparently deleted all of the negative comments.

I was wondering how other authors handle being on public display as being a total failure. I have a number of published stories on Literotica and while many of my comments have been positive, I've received my share of negative reviews. I will admit that I received a comment that cut me to the quick and in a frenzy of hurt pride I deleted the mother fucker. I mean, call me what you will, but boring? Now I'm pissed.

Still, I've been able to refrain myself from deleting other negative comments, mostly out of guilt for my previous deletion.

How do you all feel about being publicly flogged? Do you care? Come on, be honest. You writers who claim to only write for yourselves. Are you publically jacking off and really don't care what other think? Why bother posting in the first place? You could keep it to yourself, just like your actual jerkoffs.

On the other hand, maybe you are just exhibitionists.

I for one liike feedback, but I far prefer the positive kind. This ain't exactly a paying job, you know.

Woodnymph:

Yes indeedy. Comment deletion does in fact happen. Again, I shamefully admit that I did it once myself. But that one really hurt.

I have deleted all negative comments I've gotten so far, because all but one of them were for stories I wrote deliberately as non-erotic and all the complaints were "hey, there was no sex in this story." Well, duh, Professor...

I got one negative comment telling me there was no sex in my story "In the Rain," where there is (oral) sex. That was just plain dumb, so I deleted it because it gave a false impression of my story.

If I were to get a serious critique of my story that was negative, I might leave it up. It hasn't happened yet, though.

I think if it was a true critique of the story, I would leave it, but if it was just a personal attack, like some of the Loving Wives PCs seem to be, I' wouldn't mind deleleting it.

so, Kassiana. Would you allow this one to stay? It ain't exactly constructive criticism but it's kinda close:

Bull shit of a story!!!!!!!!!!!

You usually write a good story, but this one is pure bullshit. Go back to your other stories and reread them to rememder how to really write????????????

I let it stay, but it didn't exactly massage my ego. Or even give me any actual instruction on how to improve. I did however go back and reread my other stories. I still can't remember how to write.

I've only received one negative comment so far. And it wasn't even directed at me but at the person who edited and advised me on the story.

In fact, it wasn't a negative comment, it was a personal attack on that person. So I deleted it. No worries on my part.

I have received a couple of weird ones. On my most commented upon piece, one person was unhappy I didn't end it with a threesome  and the other bitched that it was too long and not hard core enough.  (It was a Romance.)

Those I kept for the laughs.

So that's going to be my rule of thumb. Personal attacks go into the bit bucket. Everything else can stay.

Would you allow this one to stay?
Probably not. I'm not above using profanity in my personal life, but I don't accept it in comments. If the comment had been something more like, "I usually like your stories, but I didn't like this one. Maybe you could rewrite it to include more oral sex," I probably would let it slide.

I love the negative comments from the guy who always wants the female protagonist to become pregnant, especially by someone not her husband and hopefully a black man.

If a story doesn't end that way, he will usually throw in a negative comment or a strong recommendation.

Funny.

Hmm I've only had one feedback I felt was a bit nasty and I left it, basically so everyone who looked at the comments could roll there eyes and go "oh what a moron" So i don't think i'd ever delete a public comment but i don't know for sure.

Wow. I've missed out on him, I guess.

Yeah, but at least he puts his name down.

I just reread the two comments I've thought about dropping. Both by that fuck ANONYMOUS.

Because of that, once again, I've kept them.

I have yet to delete a public comment made on one of my stories.

Some of them can hurt, though. That's part of the nature of putting yourself out there I guess.

I don't like the public comments myself. Sure they're nice, but it's far nicer to get an e-mail with that wonderful subject: 'Feedback from Literotica for TheEarl.' Makes me feel all warm.

I have to say that I'd leave any and all evil public comments up. If nothing else, it'd be patently obvious that the writer was off and away with the fairies. 12 comments saying I'm the best thing since sliced bread and 1 from Mr Anonymous telling me that "My sotry suked big donky dck." Democracy's wonderful isn't it?

The only public comment I've ever deleted was one by a friend on this site who accidentally made a reference that could identify her real life surname.

The Earl

I feel so bad. I deleted a public comment and you guys say that's not kosher!

Seriously, there's the need to do a bit of gardening sometimes. I will never close off public comments, feedback is not back-rubbing, but there are things that need to be weeded out. I got a 40 line (incorrect) drunken diatribe from somebody about a piece of mine on etymologies that I deleted because it might have put people off reading all the other (good, bad and ugly) reviews that they had taken the trouble to post.

I do think there's a need to moderate here. If someone sends me a 5-page mail telling me I am going to burn in hell, I read it and delete it. Same approach should apply in the public forum, never suppress a criticism but don't clutter the place up with loonies.

It seems to take a lot to vote, let alone give a comment. We should help them, we crave attention, both good and bad (read Earl). The Loving Wives lobby are bizarre but need to be addressed. I've just canned a cuckold story because I'm not sure it stands up in real life. Been reading too much of the macho studs (That's not you Earl, but I'm open to offers to try and prove othrerwise.)

I've not deleted a comment yet -and I keep every single email feedback i get, good, bad, boring the lot.

I don't know if i ever would. I guess it would depend on circumstances. Mostly I go with The Earl's thinking, leave the moronic feedback there to give folks a laugh (and give balance if it's proper constructive critiscism)

EL,
Sure I go with what you say, but it is a question of clutter. We guys who write crave reaction. We squirm with pleasure under the the tawse of criticism as long as we haven't got the awful threat of 'how many have you sold'.

There are comments that are just plain silly. I would never remove anythging that complained about my grammar, eroticism, plot etc., as long as it was reasonably succinct. There is a difference, I've found, between what people will say in a 'public ' forum from what they will say to you in a mail. I'm a neophyte here, 4 going on 5, but I begin to understand the audience. The difference between First Time and Erotic Couples is amazing.

No censorship, but keep the channels open for something that might stimulate the 'little grey cells'.

elfin -sure I can see the need to delete comments under certain circumstances though so far *touch wood* I've not had to do it :)

I keep all my Feedback e-mails as well. Was pushing 87% of my Hotmail inbox and debating whether to start deleting some at one point. Then they expanded my storage space to 250Mb!

Serendipity doo da.

you could always c&p it all to word if you had to though.
fun,fun,fun!

Measure the comment.......

If a negative comment is valid, maybe with a lower measure score, I don't mind leaving the comment.

It might hurt, it might influence other readers, but it's there.

I have, and will delete a public comment that either shows the stupidity of the reader, shows the lack of reading, or purposefully hammers a story because they can.

An example. One reader did not like my dialogue, trashed the story, trashed the writing style, trashed the premise of which the story was based, etc.

Point being, the story was fiction. My story, my dialogue, my writing, etc. The comments were not valid. And to say "Boring" did not match the comments or vote score of the other 50,000 reads.

DELETED!!! So go figure..........

And I got an email response from one reader that trashed the story to a level where they actually believed I was the prime character. That I did all things in the story. I must be an "adolescent" with no writing ability, etc. And of course, the return email to contact him was not real. Just another way to boast their ego, with no ramifications.

I was under the impression that that kind of bashing usually occurred if a Loving Wife story was not about a cheating slut and a cuckolded wimp, but about marital nookie.

Anyway, the only things I have removed from PCs are double postings, and on one occation a personal attack against another poster that included unbidden quotes form a private mail.

If people want to write what a worthless piece of hack I am, they are free to do so. if they want to be rude and obnoxious aboutit, it hurts their rep much more than mine.
