What I wonder about the World Cup (and the Olympics for that matter) is why so many countries which are in such dire straights, economically & socially, are willing to spend so much money on meaningless showcase sporting events that never, ever, generate a positive ROI.

Stick a fork in England
Meaningless?
Sport is very powerful, it can unite a nation, give them something else to concentrate on.
The lack of participation in international sport helped to bring an end to Apartheid in South Africa...so I don't think you can dismiss the importance of sport so easily.
It is aruably, in some cases, more powerful than politics.
Well said Jack
Damn. Not how I expected that match to go.
but i like pasta....![]()
bye bye england
The Americas are kicking some Euro butts.....Italy losing is sweet!
I guess that would be the silver lining.bye bye england
I don't know, Uruguay and Costa Rica are playing strong. I don't know all the standings but you still got Brazil, Columbia, Mexico, Argentina, Ecuador. There still a ways to go.Be interesting to see how England perform in their last match with the removal of all expectation & pressure.
France, Germany & Holland all looking very in form - could well be a European winner in S.America - got to happen one day.
I thought that's what I heard. I wasn't really paying attention.commentator on telly just now:
the next match is gonna be interesting. one the one hand, we have a country with, from our perspective, peculiar people and customs; on the other hand, we have ghana.
LOL!
Argentina spent way too much time in the Iranian side of the field.
I thought there was a lot of sloppy play on both sides.they didn't deserve to win
Germany v Ghana is game of the tournament so far ...... both sides going for the win
I'd say Ghana much more than Germany, especially once Klose leveled it at 2. Germany had no sense of urgency where Ghana was looking to run. Appeared as though Germany was content with a 2-2 tie. Once again, Ghana outplays their opponent and gets no result.
I'm amazed how open these group games have been with many sides going for it. Makes for a really good spectacle
