Ray Davison 29 year old vice squad cop stared at his reflection in the mirror above the green marble top of the vanity unit in his apartment, only he didn't see Ray Davison he saw Ricky Devine, 29, assassin, murderer and rapist. He had been Ricky Devine for three and a half years now in deep cover trying to collect enough evidence to put Toni Torterenni behind bars for the rest of his life.
He had begun as an enforcer for Torterenni and through becoming as ruthless as the other gangsters he had moved up through the ranks and was now one of Toni's trusted 'soldiers'. He'd been forced to abandon his principles and executed other mobsters in order to get noticed he had also had to 'discipline' girls who wouldn't cooperate with Toni's ideas of how his women should behave. Over time a major part of him had become Ricky Devine, passionless, ruthless, cruel. Deep down inside him though was a spark of the decent human being he had once been, recently he had been having difficulty preventing that spark from bursting into flame.
His thoughts were interrupted by his cell phone ringing,
"Devine" he snapped
Toni's voice came through sounding all friendly,
"Ricky, how do you fancy being a chauffeur for the day? My latest squeeze wants to go shopping and I've only got you free today and I know I can trust you with her, you won't be tempted to go behind my back will you?"
Although the tone was friendly the veiled threat was there,'Keep your hands to yourself'.
"Sure Toni whatever you say, she'll be safe with me, pick her up at your place? What time?"
Ricky dressed smartly and made sure his Glock 17 handgun was fully loaded before he put the shoulder holster on. He sat outside Toni's apartment waiting for Toni's girlfriend. When she appeared his heart beat faster and an icy hand gripped his heart. As she approached he quickly put on his wraparound sunglasses and kept his face averted, not wanting to look at her, the memories were too painful.
