Also, the area around the Salton Sea in California is very surreal-looking.

I thought they might be. Bizarre place.

I've been to Centralia, Pennsylvania. It's not as dramatic, because most of the buildings have been razed, but you can see smoke rising out of the ground and feel the heat from the coal burning beneath.
