The oppressed masses in the U.S. have begun to fight back against Bush's plans for perpetual war abroad and police state repression at home. At least 75,000 people (the police estimate, no doubt low) showed up, one of them being me. There was also a massive police presence, as D.C. and other cops did everything they could to chill and intimidate dissent. (Doubtless the only reason the cops did not attack the protesters (as they did another march in April 2000) was the massive media coverage and fear of political repercussions.) No wonder there's no money for social programs-- it's all being spent on police, prisons, and the military!
This demonstration was an excellent start, but demonstrations alone can NOT stop the war or spike Bush's police state drive. It is vitally important to mobilize the social power of labor. By collectively withholding their labor, the working class can bring the capitalist economy to a standstill and stop the U.S. war machine. For a general political strike against the war! It is also necessary to realize the total bankruptcy of the Democratic Party, which not only acquiesced to Bush's and the Republicans hijacking of democracy in 2000, but have (with very few exceptions) gone along with Bush's terrible war and police state machinations. Build a fighting worker's party!
