Why?
Starred: Liam Neeson (AA nominee) before everyone knew who he was. Frances McDormand (AA winner) co-starred. Larry Drake broke out from playing a retarded fetch-it boy as one of the sickest and funniest villains in recent memory.
Directed: Sam Raimi's (Spiderman, Evil Dead) direction is well-paced and exciting to the core.
Suprise: In almost every comic book hero movie there's rarely a suprise to be experienced. DARKMAN came out of left field, took itself (kinda) seriously, but was fun for all the right reasons.
On some level the movie's logic made much more sense than other MAN turned hero like Batman (why is he so strong if he's mortal?) or Spiderman (why doesn't he pick up some of the other less savory habits of a spider, much like Jeff Goldblum in THE FLY?)
