So there are threads for Nerds, for People over 40, Those who like Older Men, and, once upon a time, one for those of us in-between, but I haven’t seen one for something that will be happening to me here soon.
In two months I’ll turn twenty-seven.
Twenty-seven!
That’s only three years from being thirty.
Thirty!
Now I know thirty isn’t as big of a deal as it once was. As the baby boomers have aged and not slowed down it just isn’t as top of mind as it once was. It doesn’t seem to be discussed much anymore beyond the whole “forty is the new thirty” thing.
It is something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately. Will I feel any different? Does turning thirty change how others will view me? Will thirty finally place me in that category of “older” man.
It is also interesting that the expectations of what one should be at thirty has changed significantly. Married with kids is still a big part of it, but how many of us are now concentrating on paying off those college loans, going to grad school, traveling all over the place, doing our best to become entrenched in a profession, and taking the time to do those crazy things that people in the past would have seen as a desperate attempt to hold onto our youth.
At no time in history has there been a time where there was such a range of who and what people are as they approach thirty.
So pull up a seat. Feel free to share your own thoughts. Lets figure this thing out and see if we can’t convince some of our older brethren to tell us it’s all going to be ok.
I figured it would be a good time for all of us who are dangerously close…
