What's the best over-the-counter treatment? Nizoral works better for me than anything else I've tried, but it's not working very well any more.

My hair is thick as a mink's, and I've always had a horrible dandruff problem. It actually forms clumps. Sometimes I envy my bald brother.

Use it post shampoo and as a leave- in conditioner. How much depends on how thick your hair is and how it'll stand up to the oil without getting too greasy. Might take a bit of time for your body to acclimate to it.

This would depend upon the cause.
That shoulder drift could be caused by a dry scalp, eczema/psoriasis, fungal infection, allergies, failure to properly rinse shampoo and products out, poor hygiene, etc.
The wrong product could make it worse.

Dandruff is caused by a dry scalp. In most instances, a shampoo/conditioner in one combo will help to control it.

You can also go to a salon or spa for a hot oil treatment.

For starters, don’t shampoo every day. Head and Shoulders about twice a week can significantly reduce the problem.

One of my boys used to get it real bad and he got some prescription stuff that worked. He stopped using it and I can't remember what it was called but it did work.

GF has a dry scalp and uses hempseed oil. You gotta rub it in and leave it for like 10 minutes.

I wouldn't know. My scalp produces so much oil the US tried to invade it.

To preserve your natural scalp oil?

This is where it starts. You might also want to look into whether you're getting enough fats in your diet.

The point here is that your scalp is still your skin. If you abuse the skin on the rest of your body, it'll dry out and start flaking. Ditto for your scalp.

I think there are "dry shampoos" out there too that will clean your hair but leave your scalp alone.

Dry shampoo is the opposite of that. It soaks up scalp oil but leaves the rest of your hair alone. I use those sometimes if I don't have time to wash my hair. They're for super oily hair. They don't actually clean your hair, they just soak up the oil so you present the ILLUSION of having clean hair. If your head don't look like an oil rig then people assume you washed it.

They're not a long term solution, they're for helping you bullshit your way through that one day until you can get home and actually wash it. They're a "I woke up late on wash day and I'm gonna be late for work if I try to take a whole shower" product. It's the equivalency of running baby wipes under your pits before you put your deodorant on. You know you're skanky but you're fucking late and you think you can bluff your way through it.

It's literally just corn starch and aerosol spray. That's all dry shampoo is. It's made for people like me who go from, "Slicked back gorgeous locks" to "greasy mountain witch" if you don't wash your hair. It's probably way more likely to give you dandruff than to cure it.

no offense but i'd rather discuss your bad case of flaming asshole or your gingivitis than your dandruff. dandruff makes me gag.

Get a very short haircut - a number 1. It's not a cure but it makes it easier to manage.

For a cure, find a sheep farm, get a handful of wool , rub your scalp with the wool. The natural lanolin will fix the dandruff but you will stink something awful. :D

Don't wash you hair too often.

I used to use that, but it never seemed to help much.

Then there is a strong possibility that your problem is NOT dandruff.

You can try various anti-fungal (such as Libsam's not-as-silly-as-you think suggestion) or you can see a doctor for a professional opinion.

Is that something you can get at a drugstore?

She gets it as Sally's but I think you can get it pretty much anywhere that sells hair stuff. I started using it on my tips and I've not had a split end since. I use it on my eyebrows sometimes if I don't have time to groom them. I get crazy long eyebrows, too. Like the fucking Monarch.

True. Genetics and constant stress may affect it too. I think shampoos like Head'n'Shoulder or even Nizoral can't cause any serious harm though. But still, it may be worth trying some hair masks as mentioned in this article. Someone above has already recommended a coconut oil, it's good to strengthen hair, but for dandruff, I would go for almond oil, lemon juice, and honey. Apply it for 20 minutes and then rinse it well. Try this every 4 days then tell us about the effect.
