Damsel in distress! Calling all computer experts

As an AOL subscriber, I have many complaints and problems with their service but one thing in particular bothers me and annoys me beyond reason.

Can someone tell me how to get around their 'idle' disconnect program? I am beginning to think the problem is with my computer because I have two friends who can leave their systems untouched for days and still remain online.

Yet, I can be sitting here typing a long email and suddenly get booted (and the subsequent error message tells me that I was kicked off due to inactivity!)

Is there something I can override or bypass to allow me to get around this? Or is there a software package that I can download that will alleviate this problem?

Thanks for any help you can offer. :)

Best thing you can do is go into your options for your e-mail program you use and set it to check for mail every minute to 5 minutes. That will defeat most idle programs.

Morden,

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. However, I must be S-L-O-W tonight as I do not understand how to set this up. I have looked everywhere and cannot find an option for 'checking' email on AOL.

Is there any other way of defeating the idle? It just doesn't make sense why I get booted if I get up to go to the bathroom or if I sit here reading a long story. And, yet, my friends can leave their houses, go out to dinner and a movie and still be connected when they get back home.

I want to know how this is possible!!! But, really, I just want someone to tell me how to fix it so that I don't get kicked off! :)

Certainly with 33,000 members here, one of you must have an answer!

Is it AOL or Explorer?

Is it really AOL or IE tht's disconnecting you? I have Explorer set to disconnect with 20 Minutes idle time, with a 30 second warning before disconnecting.

I also have it set to try and disconnect when I've been on 4 hours.

If it is indeed AOL, edit your user profile, and see if there is an option there forr disconnect idle time or a time online limit. I know JUNO.COM has options like that, but I've never used AOL

Harold,

It's really AOL. It has nothing to do with Explorer. If you are idle for a certain amount of time, a prompt asks if you want to stay on line; you click yes or no. If you don't do anything it kicks you off in another 10 minutes.

Or, in my case, sometimes it just kicks you off without this prompt because it doesn't detect any activity. I think that may be a bug in their system. It only 'reads' activity when you either surf the net, or visit an area on AOL's proprietary content. (so reading emails, or writing new ones for example doesn't count - as you are not clicking on anything or showing any movement) Kind of like a motion detector.

There is no way to disable this function on the user end. I have checked and double checked every single option under the "preferences" area and there is nothing there that deals with this. Unless I am just totally blind. That is why I believe there must be some stand alone software that people have.

Just to suggest something totally off the wall. Have you tried calling AOL's tech. support about this? They may be able to offer some suggestions that we can't seeing as they're working from inside the system.

Does AIM keep your connection open, if you have it running and you are logged in? If not, maybe try running a browser with a chat program logged in the background. That will keep activity going on over the connection while you type your email. Of course there probably is some kind of setting in your email program or AOL program that would be the correct permanent fix....

Well with AOL it might be different because of thier perticular interface. You can get around it but it is a little complicated. Do you share your net line with your house line? If you do that could be your problem right there. Bad phone lines can cause static which may or may not disconnect you. Also, if someone else picks up the line. You can also check your dial up connection. I am not to familiar with AOL but there might be an option with AOL for a idle disconnect that you might have on. I know with most dial up connections there is a 4-5 hour time you are allowed on before disconnecting. Some ISP's are worse then others.

you can use an anti idle program so you wont get kicked off. I am on AOL too and it used to bug me all over the place. I have the 5.0 and. 6.0 anti idles. you can go HERE to download it if ya want. The file aint big at all and its sooo handy. Sometimes Im downloading stuff and I just go to sleep and leave the net on and it stays on fine. I used to NEVER be able to do that.

Goodluck! :)

Mystery JKR

Another Damsel in distress

I've written to the webmasters a week ago and got NO REPLY. Very frustrating. Here's what's happening to me:

Subject : HELP!!!
Date : 09/June/01
A : webmaster@literotica.com
CC : info@literotica.com.

I'm using Internet Explorer 5 and I'm having problems with your server. It seems that my account may not be activated, even though I posted twice already. Here's what happens to me:

When I'm in the FAQ (http://www.literotica.com/forum/misc.php?action=faq), and whether I want to "edit your profile", "edit your options", go to "my vB home", I get this screen first:
"You are not logged in or you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:
You are not logged in. Fill in the form at the bottom of this page and try again.
You do not have permission to access the page that you were trying to. Are you trying to edit someone else's post or trying to access administrative features? Check that you are allowed to perform this action in the Forum Rules.
If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.
Your User Name: Want to register?
Your Password: Forgotten your password? "

OK, so I log in and I get this screen (http://www.literotica.com/forum/member.php):
"Thank you for logging in, Beryl" etc...

and then (for instance at http://www.literotica.com/forum/usercp.php?):
vBulletin Message

The administrator may have required you to register before you can view this page. Forgotten your password?"

OK then , I click on "register" and get this screen (http://www.literotica.com/forum/register.php?action=signup):
" vBulletin Message
Our records show that you have already registered at this board under the name of Beryl. If you have lost your password, click here. If you would like to modify your profile, click here."

Oh, OK, let me try to modify my profile, so I click on the 2nd "here" and get this screen (http://www.literotica.com/forum/member.php?action=editprofile):

What's more, now that I'm logged in, I can't access the Control Panel (http://www.literotica.com/forum/usercp.php?), Calendar (http://www.literotica.com/forum/calendar.php?), Members (http://www.literotica.com/forum/memberlist.php?), FAQ (http://www.literotica.com/forum/misc.php?action=faq), Search (http://www.literotica.com/forum/search.php?) and Home (http://www.literotica.com/forum/index.php?), simply said: all the links on the top right...

And I can't get either into the the Bulletin Board (http://www.literotica.com/forum/),
the sexual roleplay (http://www.literotica.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?forumid=11)
or the online roleplay (http://www.literotica.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?forumid=10)

***************
All I can do is log out.... go to the forums index (http://www.literotica.com/forum/index.php?) search painfully for the thread in the sexual roleplay where I started a few days ago (http://www.literotica.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=35007)... and post a reply!

I can also enter the calendar (http://www.literotica.com/forum/calendar.php?), the members page (http://www.literotica.com/forum/memberlist.php?) or the FAQ (http://www.literotica.com/forum/misc.php?action=faq)...

But I can't access the control panel: it asks me to log in and then I get stuck (see above).

Hmmm... what is going on here? Please explain! I'm at witts end.

Beryl

Since I have such limited access to the forum features, I can't contact anyone there directly.

Moreover, this is what shows up at the bottom left of the screen when I am on Lit' as unlogged user (I can't read anything it when I'm logged in!!!):

Forum Rules:
You may post new threads HTML code is OFF
You may post replies vB code is ON
You may not post attachments Smilies are ON
You may not edit your posts code is ON I have now posted 12 times here, and I am still unable to edit my own posts. If anyone can help me, please e-mail me to: CourtesanBeryl@aol.com Thanks so much... **********************

New User Name

This was NOT an AOL problem.
Due to the settings I used when registering as "Beryl", the only thing I could at Literotica was to post (see above).
Unfortunately, the webmasters never answered my pleas for help and members were unsuccesful at clearing that issue.

The only thing I could do was to create this new user name... and start my posting counter from scratch.
Courtesan Beryl is now a fully operational ID! :)

America OFF line

Hi Barb,

America On Line is anything but. They do not have the capacity to service all their subscribers, if they try to come on-line at the same time. The eighty-five billion dollars that they used to purchase Time-Warner reduced the amount of money that they had availabe to provide service to their customers.

Having said that, they are still the best to use if you need to connect to people all over the World.

I own six computers located in four areas of the country. There are distinct patterns of cut-off that AOL uses. First the general ones. A window asking if you wanted to stay on line. Then, there was a pattern of cutting you off with a window saying that you were idle. Finally, they now just boot you off if you have been on a while and the system is over loaded.

So many people just logged on again that they not only cut you off but forced you to re-boot, a delay of ten minutes or so.

In addition to this, the used a procedure of slowing the loading time of pages, until they finally cut you off.

If you are in an area of high student use, these practices would be employed most at times that the kids were using their "Instant message" feature. A lot of kids would have their computer on while doing their homework, and have a constant stream of instant messages coming in from all their friends.

In contrast, if you were logged on at 0530 AM, there would be no harassment.

I have used www.stayonpro.com/ for a couple years. You can download it for $19.95. It will help, but their on-line timer will still bump you after forty-five minutes on a busy afternoon. One way to defeat this is to sign off, and sign back on at the forty minute time.

Want to see an interesting figure. AOL has 30,000,000 accounts paying an average of $21.00 a month. Wow. Talk about cash flow!

Hi Softly!

It seems you haven't notice my location. I am in Paris, France, Europe... you know that continent that lies on the other side of the ocean from you? ;-)
And in France, the only provider that offers UNLIMITED USE is AOL, and that's for 100 FF a month, which is about 14 USD and the telephone costs are included (you pay for local calls in Europe!).
So.... guess what? No matter how AOL operates in the States, I am staying with those guys.
And since I created this new CourtesanBeryl account, with the default problems, I am a happy Literotica member!

I SAW LADY IN DISTRESS, so I saddled my white charger, called my trusty helpers, who carry my sword, my shield, my banner and lance. I mounted and rode off in search, imagine me on my White horse, in sliver chain mail, under a white tunic with a red cross, approaching in the distance. How can I help you? I am at your service.

Hello, oh great knight!

Thanks so much for your concern...

Poor Beryl is dead, Rest in Peace... And Courtesan Beryl is alive and kickin! Yeaaahhhhhh!

All there is to know, for the education of newcomers, is that if you don't choose the option: "Log in each time' (or something similar), it is a BIG mistake you will never be able to fix.

And WHY is that a big mistake? The only thing the system will let you do is to post... You won't even be allowed to edit your own posts!...

So you might as well do what I did, create a new ID!

The issue may just the way you are dialing in and getting dropped connections. Try going to your connection preferences and disabling TCP header compression. It's something about how the packets of information being sent may cause your connection to drop. I hope this helps :)

Ummmmm....

Whom are you trying to help here? Barb (her issue is really really old by now) or me?
Please be more specific.

keeping aol "up"

Jumping into an aol chat room (you don't have to chat, just be in a busy room) will keep one of the timers from tricking out...that should give you a couple hours.
