"damn It!"

I've seen it spelled: damnnit and damnit. Dunno which one is correct, and doubt either one of them is....

I've seen damnit, damn it, and also dammit. I think it all depends on the author themselves.

Is it being used in relation to a person, situation, or thought?? Can you give us the sentence? Maybe that will help.

Any DAMNED way you wish, as far as I'm aware.

I do know, that when speaking, "Sonuvabitch!" is all one word. ;)

So is my aunt's favorite word: Holyjesusbuttfuckingchrist!

Is that the aunt with barf in her purse?

Seems like she has need of a good strong expletive! :(

I'd only ever seen dammit until recently, which is the dictionary form - such as there can be for a colloquialism like this. But the Web throws up so many variants.

Turns out 'dammit' only outnumbers 'damnit' by 3:1 out there. And in case there was some strange site or cult favouring the lesser spelling throwing the numbers out, I tested for it in arbitrary combinations like 'dammit blue', 'dammit coat', and it still comes in at 3:1.

With more particular words like 'dammit visionary', 'dammit scallop', and 'dammit operand' it stretches to 4.5:1.

looks up...

My life? No, not really. Why, does it show?

As two words: Damn it.
As one word: Dammit.

It's not one word. Spelling it as one word is a phonetic thing, not a spelling thing, so spell it phonetically.

Total BS, but it sounds good, right?

Looks wrong (to me) though. I spell it damnit, and to hell with the whole lot of ya if I'm gonna change it any time soon.

Crazy language. I understand 'def', 'phat', and 'cheese-off' are now officially to be found in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. How grand. Thank you Tony Kornheiser!

In situations like this where as far as I am aware neither of them is a real word, I just write them as it sounds.

Oh, and had to reply to this thread (see sig.).

These are concerns that rock the bedrock of our civilization.

One of my weighty worries is whether the correct spelling is "pfui, phoey, or phooey?" Of course, there's "hooey," not "hui." Hmm, maybe "phui," with a silent "p?"

Then there's Whoville

Hiya, Red. Nice to see you here again.

I'd say you need to note which civilization you're talking about.

Then re. hoo's and phoo's, imagine what a Spanish speaker would make if them.

Good afternoon.

Except for a little francais, always english here. I'm almost scared to ask what "hoo's & phoo's" are in spanish...........

Remembering the wonderment of Chevrolet when their car the "Nova" did not sell well in Spanish speaking countries.

No, I don't pay attention to car sales, but you made me grin, thanks.

Then there's the way my grandmother used to pronounce Chevy.

See you about, eh? Purr :rose:

Damnnit

The only thing I can visualize for "damnit" is someone cursing the head lice nits as they are combing them out of their hair....

And no, I have never been so afflicted, nor personally known anyone who was.

Sing., that's very funny. You must not have children. Headlice: the bane of daycare centers.
