So there's this new thing-new to me at least-called "Gooning" and the gist of it is that people watch so much porn that real life sex loses its excitement and they'd rather masturbate to porn then be with a partner.

It's not so surprising, considering how easily available porn is. I remember being a horny teenager, and apart from the real thing, there were only dirty magazines, and you even had to go through all the embarrassment of buying them. So we were all ready to swim across the ocean just for a chance to get some action with a girl, even if it was just copping a feel.
These days, porn is everywhere, so I guess after watching hours of videos of porn stars and their toned bodies doing some extreme things, it's not easy to get excited about some vanilla sex with a regular girl or a guy. That's an interesting point. I can kind of understand it, but that phrasing makes it sound like there's a sharp distinction and I can't quite wrap my head around that part.

But maybe that's what separates someone who really likes to escape into porn and someone who's truly addicted?

Personally, I escape into things because I find pleasure in them.

When I was a teenager, I loved to party. I followed that cliche where it a ton of fun until I began to realize that I'd forgotten how to have fun without it--but even at the lowest, I wouldn't say it wasn't about self-gratification. It was about that, and then it also became about the escapism.
