Stuffed cabbage or cabbage rolls. Our family never rolled them, more or less folded them, then stacked them tightly into roasting pans with a little water, and steamed them for 3-4 hours!

No sauce

Hmmmmm - stuffed with????? Small diced meat, onions and rice? like for stuffed peppers? that might be pretty good but could always be better with sauce and cheese. Your grandmother really isn't that wrong actually - tomatoes and peppers are members of the nightshade family and those with rheumatoid and osteo arthritis are recommended to avoid them or at least reduce them (Don't know how much of an effect they might have on fibro) - which is actually sort of horrifying because Italian is just about my favorite food......(sigh)

Ok.

I tried alligator while in New Orleans last time (I spent 90% of that trip in the hotel in bed due to bronchitis (yep again). It was tasty

"Haven't had 'gator yet but I've had rattle snake - frog legs - shark - jackrabbit - snapping turtle - squirrel - I'm game though if I ever get the chance."

2 parts ground sirloin, 2 parts ground pork, 1 part ground veal, or just meatball/meatloaf mix :D

Grated onion OVER the meat, cook rice is added, as is an egg, salt and pepper.

I'm allergic to ALL nightshade roots, fruits, and berries - that's tomatoes, potatoes, bell peppers, and eggplant. The allergy manifests itself from stomach cramps to sweating and fever to hives and rashes.

It's not affected my arthritis

An aunt used to make a "Hunting Stew". Base was a tomato and vegetable soup, with smoked sausage, usually smoked kielbasa, in it. Then she'd add browned small "varmit" my uncles, dad, whoever went hunting. I had squirrel, rabbit, snake, turtle.

When I was a teenager and hunted, she's make the stew for them, and I'd have fried kabasy and sauerkraut with onions and bacon sandwiches

Ah yeah can't blame you, I wouldn't have eaten that either

Dad and his siblings grew up really poor, so they had to shoot their protein

Pretty much the same reason I've eaten so much - I do enjoy venison, elk, bison but the small stuff was always just soup or stew meat - protein at least. Was like going out and picking wild greens or making poke salad or picking wild fruit. Shark steaks and rattlesnake steaks are actually pretty good though.

I took the Progeny to the wild strawberry patch a few weeks ago. He ate a few before stopping and loading up a pint.

Next week, I think the blackberries should be ready.

These berries are in the same place where my grandfather put the wild seeds in 1949!!

Awww that's awesome

Just started planning a trip to visit my Best friend in Kansas City at the end of the year. And we are going to go down to New Orleans for New years. So excited :D

That is awesome, you will have a fab time, I am sure :)

The three of you totally lost me with the food talk *giggles*. I haven't heard of half of it and that I had heard of, I wouldn't dare eat :D

(Giggles) "The benefits of growing up poor and Southern - doesn't matter where you go, the food is pretty much the same. Google 'poke salad' sometime - fishin' for catfish out in the sloughs with my cousins - everyone meeting down at the general store after supper - sitting on truck tail gates, drinkin' ice cold Coke out of the cooler ($0.10 each but a nickel back when you return the bottle), flirting with the farm boys - if you think I miss it you're not half wrong....I do enjoy my plumbing and air conditioning though.....;)

Happy Hump Day daddies and girls!! :rose::rose::kiss:

Wow, everyone was up late last night. All that talk of yummy food. I have to agree with Peaches---yummy fried okra but I also like okra and tomatoes. And beignets.....YUM!! Now if I just had a daddy to taste the powdered sugar from my lips. LOL

Have a great day everyone! :cattail:

Afternoon everyone...had a busy few days but now back in circulation. Saw I missed a great chat about food...and now I'm hungry again.

Off shortly to go play in a jam session, but I'll be thinking of you guys. (Wonder if I can land myself a submissive groupy LOL  )

Beignets are so yummy, but I always breathe just before I take a bite and get powdered sugar, everywhere.

Wife is allergic to okra, I mean, break out in hives if ONE piece touches her allergic.

I don't care for fried green tomatoes, but if you beer batter thickly sliced beefsteaks and deep fry them, yummy!

I did some more cleaning at my mom's this morning, awoken from a great dream :(

We found more cash money, along with a cache of REAL pearls: necklaces, earrings, and bracelets
