Casting Call: D&D style thread

This thread will be loosly based on a campaign I was in a few years ago.

There aren't really any guidelines for character creation, but I suggest a party of a fighter, a rogue, a wizard, and a cleric.

If you don't know anything about D&D, that's okay. I can help you with character creation as well as what your character would and wouldn't be able to do.

I'll need your character's stats, gear, etc (basically a character sheet) before we get started. I will be taking a strict DM/NPC postion.

Marius looks fine. If we can't get some more players, I'll make a couple NPC's and we'll get started anyway.

I'll join up also but you'll have to wait on the charecter. Gotta think something up for his background and such but as soon as I do I'll post it up.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that the characters will be starting out with 3 class levels.

Multiclassing will be done like in 3E D&D. In other words, there are no restictions on race/class combos anymore, and every time you level up, you can put a level in whatever class you like, regardless of your ability scores. Dual-classing and multiclassing as they were in 2E no longer exsist.

3E spells

Spells now come in ten levels: 0 through 9. Anybody can cast a spell, as long as they have levels in a spellcasting class and havve a high enough ability score. The ability score requirement for casting a spell is 10+ the spells level, so a wizard needs an INT score of 19 to cast a 9th level spell.

The spellcasting attribute for each class is:
Wizards= Intelligence
Bards, Sorcerers= Charisma
Druids, Clerics, Rangers, Paladins= Wisdom
Other classes= None

Other Stuff
Additionally, each character recieves an extra point to add to whatever attribute they like every 4 levels (at 4th, 8th, 12th, etc).

Exceptional strength no longer exsists.

The bonuses for high ability scores has been changed. The chart is now:

1: -5
2-3: -4
4-5: -3
6-7: -2
8-9: -1
10-11: 0
12-13: +1
14-15: +2
16-17: +3
18-19: +4
20-21: +5
etc.

Finally (for now), the modifications to ability scores according to race have been changed.

Elf: +2 Dex, -2 Con
Dwarf: +2 Con, -2 Dex, -2Cha
Halfling -2 Str, +2 Dex
Half-elf, Human: None
Gnome: -2 Str, +2 Int, +2 Con
Half-orc: +2 Str, -2 Int, -2 Cha

The modifications in italics are my own changes. Modifications in bold are the way they appear in the 3E Players Handbook. You can choose either mine or the book's, but not both.

That should be all the stuff you need to know if you aren't familiar with 3E D&D. If I think of anything else, I'll post it.

Attatched is one of the other characters. Anybody who likes him is welcome to play him. If we don't get another player, then I'll run him as an NPC.

since marius is now 3rd level human fighter. how do you determine skill spreads and such? are they proficiencies like in 2nd edition? or wha? for instance would he become more proficient with his longsword or wha?

I am interested in playing, but I probably won't be able to post a character until tonight sometime. But I'll play a sorcerer.

Jusat use the 2E advancement rules for your character. I wouldn't be able to explain the entire mechanics of 3rd edition leveling clearly enough to be understandable.

So yes, Marius would be better with any weapon he knew how to use. He would also have some more nonweapon skills, according to 3E rules, but that probably won't be a big issue in a thread like this.

If at all possible, borrow a 3E Players Handbook from somebody. If you can't, no problem.

I got mine for about $22 US, but that was when they first came out, so they might be a bit cheaper now.

I want to play!!

I want to play. But how does this work? We play on this board or what?

Choices, Choices, What to play...
I'll be a half-elf rogue, here's my stats and all...

con 15 (+2)
int 15 (+2)
wis 12 (+1)
chr 14 (+2)
str 12 (+1)
dex 16 (+3)

I can't find 3E book at moment to look up skills, feats and how languages work.
Bio...
Aria is a 50 year old female half-elf rogue. She was raised with her elven family, but was always curious about life beyond the elves. She learned her rogue skills by getting into things she wasn't suposed to. She has lavendar eyes and golden hair. She's 5'5" and 125 lbs. She uses a long bow and a short sword.

Any other info I need?

First of all, welcome to the boards, One to Share.

Second, this thread won't be like a real D&D game. It will be more like a group storytelling thread based on D&D. So no dice rolls or anything like that.

More info can be found here.

Your character looks fine. If you need to, use Marius and Eric above as guides for what other information to include.

Note: I do not tolerate any of the 'backstabbing your own party memebers because you're CN and you feel like it' shit. Anything like that will get your character immediately and irrevocably killed in a truly horrible fashion. You will not be allowed to join again with another character, and any thing else you post to the the thread will be ignored.

If you want to change characters, that's fine. Just check with me first.

You do realize that with this ability score setup, he will be unable to cast anything other than level 0 spells.

I VERY STRONGLY suggest changing you ability scores.

Whoops. My bad. I forgot that in 3rd it's Chr rather than Dex for spells. Just switch the Char and Dex. Char is 17, and Dex is 10... but with that high a Char I woulden't really look all that dirty and unkept.. hmmm....

In 3E, charisma is no longer strictly looks. It generally represents how self-assured, confident, and persuasive the character is.

To make it a bit simpler;

Wisdom is how enlightened and observant someone is.

Intelligence is measures memory and resoning, and basically represents how much about other things the character knows.

Charisma represents how well the character knows himself.

The concept of knowing yourself is a bit hard to understand at first, but once you get it, you keep it.

Anyway, I'll attempt to get the main thread started no later than tomorrow evening.

One more thing, is this will be my first time trying to play an ORP game on the boards. I've read the beginners guide at the top, but if I make a few mistakes at the start please bare with me. But I don't really see any huge problems.

A few things to remember:

Your character is supposed to be third level. Somebody that has lived for 2000 years is unlikely to be that low in level, so you might want to make a few adjustments. Besides which, elves usually get tired of the mortal world LONG before they hit the 2k mark, so Sorian is probably considered quite strange my most elves.

Also, only rangers get favored enemies. You can still hate orcs with all the passion your heart desires, but technically, you wouldn't get any bonuses against them (just thought I'd point it out).

Also, I should have said this earlier, and this one is for everybody: I don't tolerate power trips. Taking down a dozen venerable red dragons in thirty seconds is absolutely NOT acceptable. Anything like this will immediately get the poster put on my ignore list until the thread is concluded, and I urge the remaining players to do likewise. I don't think I'll have to point out specific examples of power abuse.

Finally: We have plenty of players, and I won't be accepting new ones unless somebody quits. Silverwolf, you are welcome to join, just as long as you keep it in bounds.

sorian

ok cool im sorry i didnt know you werent accepting new chara but i am glad that your letting me into this i love playing d&d ,and about my chara i forgot to make him wizard ranger thats my bad ill change that. You see this is a chara from pool of radiance d&d the com game with multyplayer on game spy awsome game by the way. and i will change how old he is aswell.I look forward to playing in this thread and though my thread (for a first time ever boo hoo) has not gotten any responces i will play like i always have. and trust me i wont be killing more then maybe 2 orcs at a time (in luck,,, very lucky cercumstances) or fighting with a dragon
