My kids are so cute! We decided to forgo our usual holiday letter this year and write a holiday story instead. I typed and they dictated. My 10 year old's words are in NAVY, my 7 year old's words are in ORANGE and my 5 year old's words are in RED.

Once upon a time there was a group of animals who loved each other very much. They always spent Christmas together, gathered in a clearing in the forest. Ms. Beaver and her son always brought the best food and everyone always looked forward to eating that nummy nummy dinner.
This year, it was much much colder and the snow was much much deeper than ever before. The river was frozen solid and the Beavers couldn’t get out of their dam. Ms. Beaver didn’t know the river was frozen until she tried to leave her dam to collect some pinecones for decorations.
Ms. Beaver was sad because she couldn’t get any food to make for Christmas. She wasn’t going to be able to eat anything or cook for the friends that were meeting for Christmas.
This frustrated her greatly. Her son Billy was very sad because he always looked forward to seeing his very good friend Max, the floppy eared bunny, who lived far away in the other end of the forest and who he only got to see at Christmas. He hoped everything would work out.
The Beavers woke up on Christmas morning and realized the river was still frozen. Billy was really upset and threw a tantrum about not seeing his friend Max. Ms. Beaver tried to calm him down but it didn’t work. Ms. Beaver started on a little project. At first Billy didn’t want to do the project, but when his mom made a beautiful paper fish he wanted to make one too. He was having so much fun making paper fish that he forgot all about the Christmas gathering.
The Chipmunk brothers, Jacob and Joshua, were blocked by a big wall of snow, and it had ice too. There was only way to get past it. Their friend the eagle had to carry them over it to the clearing in the forest. When they got there, they were sad. The Beavers weren’t there and didn’t bring any food.
‘The Beavers are usually the first to arrive,’ they thought. ‘But maybe we got lucky this year because we got a lift from our good friend, the eagle.’ So while they waited, they decided that they would find a good place to make the fire. Meanwhile, the fox, Tortellini, was having some problems of his own. The problem was that he also got stuck at the same ice wall where the Chipmunk brothers had gotten stuck, but he didn’t have any strong flying friends to help him out. He decided that maybe this giant ice wall didn’t go all the way across the path to forest clearing. He put down one of the squashes he was carrying and began to zip around the ice wall to see if the ice wall stopped somewhere. Soon he saw the squash he had put down in the distance with no break in the ice wall. ‘Oh darn!’ he thought. He wouldn’t be able to get around that way. He thought he would try to throw things at the wall to break through. He was very slim after all. Eventually after he threw lots of things, he broke a crack, just wide enough for him to fit through. He joined his friends in the clearing.
The floppy eared bunnies found a little clearance down in the ground under a bush. They thought they would get to the clearing of the forest. They dug a little more space and they almost got through until they found a big part that had lots of icicles that were very very pointy. The Bunnies saw the icicles but Max was small enough that he could fit under, just like that! He broke one icicle that wasn’t pointy at all. Then the other Bunnies had an idea. “How about we chew on the icicles so we can get through!” They got through and one of Tortellini’s paws was covering the hole where they were about to come out.
Tortellini Fox said to the Chipmunk brothers, “Something’s moving under my paw.” The Chipmunks came over and watched the Bunnies come out of the hole.

The tortoise found a path over the wall and his friends were already there, waiting for him. “The weather is very cold,” said Tiny the tortoise. He should have been called Big, cause tortoises are big. He went to be with his friends for Christmas.
The four squirrels were having a very difficult journey through the treetops. Luckily, they are not land animals, so they did not have to come over the big ice wall. Soon the squirrels were in the clearing with their friends and everyone was wondering where the Beavers were, and what kinds of foods the Beavers would bring.
Eddie, Emma, Emily and Edgar, the Canada geese, were flying and they met up with their friend Natalie, the peace dove. They saw the ice wall. They flew a little closer and over the ice wall they saw their friends. They thought the Beavers were already at the clearing and yelled, “Merry Christmas,” from the air. The fox thought, ‘Who was that?’ When he looked up, he saw his friends in the sky.
Everybody was there except the Beavers. The friends talked about the Beavers because they were worried.
Max, Billy’s best friend, ran around the whole clearing several times, shouting, “Billy, Billy!”
Finally the tortoise spoke up, “I think the river has frozen. But I’m not positive. Natalie,” said the tortoise, “Will you please fly to the river to see if it’s frozen? And also, watch for the Beavers. If you see them, turn back to tell us. If the river is frozen over, we’ll have to think of something else.” Natalie agreed.

When Natalie came back, she said, “The river is frozen. And the Beavers cannot come through.” Everybody felt sad because the Beavers could not come. Especially Max was sad. He really wanted to play with Billy.
Tiny said, “I’m really hungry.” Then Natalie said, “I have an idea.” They walked towards her, saying, “What is your idea?”

Billy Beaver stopped working on his paper fish and he answered the door. He was very surprised to see that his friend Max was there with his family. They were carrying something. They were bringing herbs and stockings and things to hang on a Christmas tree. “We don’t even have a Christmas tree,” said Billy. The Bunnies all smiled at each other.
Suddenly they all heard something that they all thought was the river flowing. But it wasn’t the river flowing. They looked outside and saw their friends Emma, Edgar, Eddie and Emily, the Canada geese. “But what’s that they’re carrying?” asked Billy. The Bunnies just smiled again. When they landed, he saw it was a Christmas tree. “Hey Mom,” Billy shouted.
“Coming, dear,” Ms. Beaver said. When she got outside, she was most surprised by her friends. She saw a Christmas tree. “Come on, I’ll help you get it inside.”

The Bunnies, the geese and the Beavers were inside, setting up the tree and Tortellini whipped his bushy tail on the door many times. The Beavers heard him. He had in his paw some winter berries, and in his other paw he had some squash. “I brought these because we didn’t have anything to eat since you couldn’t get out of your dam.”
Ms. Beaver said, “I’m sorry. The ice was frozen over our door and we couldn’t get out. I’ll be happy to cook this food you brought with the herbs from the Bunnies.” Everyone felt wonderful and overjoyed when she said that.

Next, everyone heard the chipmunks and squirrels on the roof of the dam. They slid down the chimney into the Beaver’s home. The chipmunk brothers brought lots of firewood for a fire. And they saw that the squirrels had nuts to roast in the fire. Everyone was happy cause the squirrels and the chipmunks came. The squirrels made the fire for cooking.
While Ms. Beaver started cooking the holiday meal, everyone started laughing and singing and decorating the Christmas tree. Pretty soon, the meal was ready and they all found a place to sit in that tiny home while Ms. Beaver dished it up. They were in the middle of eating when Ms. Beaver counted heads and realized they were missing one. So she began to call the roll. After she had gone through everyone, she knew she had missed Tiny the tortoise. Before she had time to shout out, “Where’s Tiny?” they heard a very soft knock at the door. In fact, it was too small to even be a knock. It was more like a small tap. Ms. Beaver opened the door and said, “Why Tiny! Come in, come in! And you’ve brought dessert! How nice. Merry Christmas!”
After everyone was there, they played games, made more paper fish, sang and had a big party. They had all learned a lesson. Even though they didn’t meet where they usually met, they were still able to have a great Christmas because everyone was together like a big family. Everyone had worked together to have the most wonderful Christmas ever.

That was my middle daughter.
She's the budding artist.
Most of the story was her idea too.
It was mostly really fun to do - a bit frustrating with the 5 year old - but fun.

Beautiful story, Logo. And what a terrific way to handle the dreaded "Holiday Letter."

Your kids sound witty, intelligent and full of warm, imaginative dreams.

Well done, mom.
