I don't know how many people saw this sport in the olympics this year, but it was the first time I saw it. This wonderful sport is the sport known as curling. From what I gathered of it you have to slide "stones" down a sheet of ice, sweeping the ground in front of it to speed it up and knock your opponents stones out of the way. That is about all I know of it. So if anyone know just how to play this please tell me. My friends and I are dying to find out how this game works.

Also, who else stayed up late at night watching this? I've found that people either love this sport or think its the worst thing ever. What do you think?

I know the game but do not keep up with it so do not know every bit of it.

each side has I forget how many stones, and there are so many rounds per game. the brooms help speed up the stone yes, but it also helps curl it, the stone moves straigt unless the tosser spins it, then the curlers sweep from one side or another to continue it curling in that position. all the stones you are throwing don't mean anything untill the end. only one team will get a point (I think), as soon as all stones are thrown whoever is closest to the button (the dead center) gets the point for that round, your points are scored dpending where the stone is, red white blue or button circle. the closer the more points that stone is worts.

now I think it's only one stone the closest will score but not sure It could also be all the stones inside the circles get points but only one point per circle 1 for red 2 white 3 blue.

after the 10 rounds I think it's 10, the team with the most points win.

Go watch "Men With Brooms" it hits a theater near you next week. Just don't buy all the hokey (thats h-o-k-e-y not hockey) Canadiana.

We play the game better than anyone else..... and are drunk off our asses when we do it.

Then where's our gold medals?

From what I know it's not where the stone is that counts but how many stones you have closer to the centre than the other guy. So say the opposing teams closest stone was 5 feet out and you had one that was right on the button, one that was two feet out and one that was 7 feet out. You would get 2 points for having two stones closer to the center than any of the other team's stones.

I don't know where you live, but if you are in the northern US or Canada, the only way to really understand curling is to participate. Curlers are some of the most wonderful people you could meet, and you can participate at any skill level. The reality for most curlers is that it is part of their social life. It is not like the women and men you saw on the broadcasts for the Olympics. Top level curlers in Canada can make a living curling. You really need to involve yourself in the sport.

Now, saying that, most curling games are 8 ends, with each player throwing two stones per end. Sweeping is done, depending on the skip's or captain's decision and the team that scores has the closest stone or stones to the center. A team can score up to 8 in one end.

The game, for the most part is played for fun, and the social aspect after is the real part of the evening.

You would have to bring that up, wouldn't you?

Hey, we can legitimately say we're the best in the world at hockey now.

But we were just beaten on an international level. I mean, us saying we're the best at curling right now is like the Americans saying they're the best at hockey.

You're right, curling is a passion but hockey is our religion.

Sounds a lot like bocce. Except most of the bocce bowlers I've played with are old men. Some of those women curlers were pretty cute. I may need to move to Minnesota.

Found a site that has the rules of curling. It basically echoes what you said about scoring...

12. SCORING :
(1) Games shall be decided by a majority of shots and a team scores one shot for each stone nearer the tee than any stone of the opposing team.

(2) Every stone that is within 1.83 metres (6 feet) of the tee is eligible to be counted.

I'll just point out that the girls' gold medal was won by the scots. As every scots girl knows, getting the ice cold stone on the right spot, sliding smoothly on target without too much haste, is a skill much appreciated on dark winter nights. Or so I am told.

Curling does absolutely nothing for me. I have no desire to understand it. Bet none of those guys would sweep the kitchen floor if asked ;). As for the "Men With Brooms" movie, well Paul Gross is in it :)

Edited to add Paul Gross was the hunky Mountie in "Due South"...mrrroow :p
