The large boat seemed to take a life time to cross the wide ocean. The seas making people ill, and causing many to confine themselves to their cabins. Anticipation, fear, and hope seemed to fit the moods of those that traveled with all they owned for a hope of starting over in this new free world.

Kanya Marie St. Claire was but 18, old enough to be married, and opinionated enough to cause her parents to leave the old country more out of shame, then desire for a new way of life. She had been a child of privilege, been educated by the finest academies money could buy her into. However, it only seemed to fuel her outlandish opinions and desires to express her independent mind and spirit.

She had been lucky enough to be born with the beauty of a queen, with long auburn locks and sea blue eyes, she had the grace of a dancer, and smile that would melt even the strongest man. Her body was perfection, not to short, not to tall, and curves in the way the Greek statues emphasized. Unfortunately Kanya only viewed her outer shell as a curse. For there hadn't been a man that had truly questioned her of her ideas or thoughts, merely hoped to entrap them and call this woman their own.

Most young woman of fortune dreamed of the garden parties they would throw, with their handsome well off husbands to showcase. Kanya had been too busy prying into superstitions and the possibilities of things that go bump in the night. Her interests were particularly drawn to vampires. In her heart of hearts she believed they were real. She believed that they alone were bound with a knowledge of what truly was.

Her beliefs stemed from being rescued as a child. She swore that a dog as big as a horse had her cornered. With a flash she was flying through the air in the arm of a man tall and strong. His cloak hid his face as he had set her down. But she remembered his hands colder then normal. The way he growled at that yellow eyed dog.

Safe inside she told her tale. Though they all said she had a nightmare. For there was no man that could out run a horse, and no dog as big as one. Hence her fascination and intrigue.

On the last night before they left England, she was forced to attend yet another ball. Her eyes were drawn to a man, she had heard him referred to as a Lord, whom had just relocated back to England from a hiatus in Italy. The girls seemed to swoon toward him, the prospect of landing a Lord was a fashionable quest.

She smiled as the seas jarred her back and forth as she remembered that night. If her parents were going to make her move to this god forbidden place she was going to be sure that the people of Rochester remembered who she was. It was not fashionable for a woman to call out a man, especially one many years her senior. But for Kanya it was a statement of fact, that her mind was as equal if not superior to most of them.

Her eyes glanced at the Lord from Italy briefly as she rolled her eyes at the swooning women around him. She remembered the way he seemed disinterested in their chatter but still nodded politely and smiled to them.
As old Lord Grey began his speech a few feet away from him, on his widely shared opinions of what an abomination The Americas were for having an open door policy. Kanya could bare it no more.

"So what you're saying Lord Grey" she replied with her dazzling smile, "Is that 'The Americas' should only allow people from the mother country in?" "Yes that's indeed what I'm stating" he responded quite proudly that a mere woman could understand his statement.

"Well Sir, thats a bit condescending don't you think, I mean after all you are from Germany, and the last i checked that wasn't part of the mother country. Perhaps England should set the example of whom they allow in, being as they are the country above all. But a more interesting point would be, how would the new arrivals to 'The Americas' explain it to the natives? Those that already occupy the land, the ones I think you refer to as savages. What is it exactly that gives you the right to claim The Americas on behalf of our country? If I remember correctly The king has sent many of "the undesirables" to that place for failure to pay taxes. What makes you think you have the right, or any of the Kings disciples for that matter, what that country should or should not do?"

Lord Grey scoffed and made a comment about women not knowing their place before she could respond her mother began to drag her away apologizing. Kanya's eyes caught the Lord from Italy, and he smiled and nodded to her, as her mother dragged her from the room chastising her. "I swear Kenya you never fail to disgrace your family name. Is it no wonder we have to leave. If it isn't about one of your ridiculous theories about vampires, its your mouth an the inability to stop it from crossing into places that should never be." Others had turned their heads shaking them in disgust, but not him. His handsome features nodded politely, and his eyes, seemed to bare into her soul, but his skin seemed pale. She laughed at herself as she found herself swooning like one of those daft purse chasers she detested.

Eventually the boat arrived in the city whose streets were to be paved with gold. New York. The streets were busy as the buggies carried in succession the belongings of her family to their new manor. The trip on the cobblestone and dirt roads was long and tedious. It would seem that their new home was on the outskirts of a city called Albany. Her father was a loyalist to the King, and sent to make some investments on his behalf. In return a suitable match for his daughter would be hand picked by the King himself. Of course her father didn't mentioned that to Kanya, he wanted to be sure she got on the boat without a fuss. He blamed himself for encouraging her independent nature. She was the only child he had, and it appeared as though his wife would not produce a son. So it was Kanya that was his confidant, whom he shared his thoughts with and encouraged her to advise her of his.

A day or so later they finally reached their manor. It was a beautiful house, build on every specification her mother had required. It was far enough from the city to keep Kanya at bay until they found her a husband. Without proper introduction into society there would be no banishment from this place at least.

Lord Velten Grey smiled and nodded as the cacophony of women all vying for his attention spouted on nonsense about this and that. He was trying to decide which one annoyed him the most; was it the blonde in the green dress, or the brown haired girl in the dark blue dress who currently seemed to be fanning herself despite the cold night air. The beautiful young girl who’s smile radiated with sharp wit and sly cunning however, she was a special one. Her questions were the only ones he paid attention to, well thought out and meticulously arranged he was surprised a woman of her age could fence and spar with someone of his calibre.

She skilfully feigned ignorance with a question about people from the homeland only being allowed to make their way to the new world, which he acquiesced. Seeing her opportunity she pounced on him making points about his being from Germany, evening questioning his legitimacy to make such decisions on who should be allowed in the country; he scoffed.

“Your words are well-honed young lady, but see that they do not cut away your privileges.”

Admittedly he had enjoyed her repartee, it made for much more engaging conversation than the rest of the hens that clucked around him. A woman who he guessed was her mother quickly dragged her away making various apologies for the behaviour of her daughter. As she left his deep green eyes fell on hers, blue as the sky they were framed by her beautiful flowing auburn hair.

He smiled at her and nodded to her, showing his approval. As he turned back to the group of women who seemed confused and annoyed at his attentions being drawn elsewhere he overheard the the voice of the girl’s mother mention her name and something about vampires. Kanya, a beautiful name he thought, however his attention was drawn towards the word vampire. He was glad the mother had scolded her for talking about them as if they were real, his secret was still safe.

Velten Grey had been a vampire for almost a century and a half, originally turned in Germany he had laid low for many years as the legends of vampires and supernatural beings died down. When he moved to England he had begun to amass his fortune and become a more public figure eventually currying favour with the king he had been named a lord. During this time he’d had a run in with a werewolf who’d decided to threaten one of the nearby families while he was out hunting. The creature was about to devour a little girl, as bloodthirsty as he was he despised such base acts as the killing of children; so he had ensured her safety while retaining his anonymity.

He decided to place himself in Italy, building a villa that he would call his home until he heard of the exodus to the new country. Being still a friend of the monarchy he gathered his wealth and had a mansion built in the burgeoning city of New York. A city full of so much potential, a city to feast upon when the sun set. His thoughts turning to the coming dawn he made his way below, feigning illness from the arduous journey.

In a day or two they arrived and his carriage awaited to transport him to his new place of residence, of course he was not there in person and was transported in the safety of his coffin. As per his instructions his new home had been built on one of the islands slightly set back from the city with all windows facing north and south away from the sun.

It was a large mansion with an Italian style garden situated in front of it, a large fountain in the middle and a large courtyard completed his vision. Once he was safe inside the large ornate building he waited till night and awoke to find a missive had already arrived ahead of him from the king; he had sent one before leaving indicating his need to find a suitable wife.

This was an unfortunate necessity, failure to do so would attract too much attention. The king had not said who she was, only that he would need to prepare an event of some sort so that the bride to be might meet her groom in person, he handed it off to his friend and familiar Alessandro who he had brought with him.

“See that this is attended to my friend, we must make a good impression”

"We have a guest of the Kings arriving in about a weeks time" her father announced one evening at dinner. "I expect that you will be on your best behavior" He said directing his eyes to Kanya.

In response she rolled her eyes and gave a slight frown. It was always the same. Anytime a visitor came it was always of hope that he would be unattached. Her parents would practically throw Kanya at them and they would always bite and have raised hopes of securing the hand of the young beauty. Much to her parents distain they would leave in a huff after Kanya had a few moments with them to show her utter lack of propriety and obscene social skills.

It wasn't that she didn't know how to behave. Its that she simply felt restricted by her gender. Why should she sit and stitch pillows when she could be riding her stallion as fast as possible through the meadows. Why should she talk about the weather when there were more important topics to that impacted life as they knew it. To make matters worse they left society for what would appear to be the country.

In retrospect it truly didn't matter where they were, whether England or here no one would believe in the story of the girl that cried werewolf and was rescued by a dark handsome stranger, that most likely was a vampire. It would be considered superstitious nonsense.

"If you speak one word of your none sense young lady you will force us to send you to the asylum. We will not have our good name dragged through the mud again because you simply refuse to admit you made up your story." Her mother said to her with glaring eyes.

Her father on the other hand mouth opened slightly at the threat his wife had just made to their only child. Sure Kanya was difficult but he blamed himself for indulging her. He was the one that gave her books about all those things that were fabled.

Kanyas nostrils flared as she slammed the napkin down on the table. "Do not think for one moment that you have me fooled." She announced with a calm tonality. "I have no intention on marrying your visitor, nor do i have any intention on changing my ways to suit your superficial whims". With that she rose and walked quietly out of the room. Once free from the room she took off into a run through the halls out the door and into the woods nearby.

Why did she always feel safer when surrounded by the trees. They were her haven and place of refuge. The psychologists that she was forced to see found that odd. They assumed since that is where her childhood trauma took place that would be the last place she would want to be. Perhaps somewhere in the back of her mind she thought one day he's come back for her. So whenever possible, which was often, she would venture out to the woods near her home in England. Just hoping that one day he'd return and perhaps this time save her from her caged life. Now that was next to impossible since they've moved not only out of her home, but to a new continent.

After sometime she walked back to the great house from the comfort of the closest thing to freedom she could obtain. She retired to her room in the cage and gathered her most recent acquisition of folklore that had been gathered throughout several continents regarding vampires, demons, and other things that go bump in the night.

As the days passed Lord Grey prepared for the arrival of his potential wife, going out into the city every now and again to feed. Due to his recent arrival he needed to be discreet about where he hunted, preying only on more forgettable citizens and criminals that roamed woods on the outskirts of the city and the back alleys between buildings in the more dangerous areas of the city.

During the day Alessandro took over planning of the event; the king had assured him that her family would be made aware of his preparations and had left an address with which he might send an invitation. He decided to write this personally, there could be no mistakes in this undertaking, he sat down in his study and began to write. He wrote on to the family, thanking them and inviting them to his home to dine. He paused, then began to write a second letter to the lady in question:

To the lady who may one day be my wife.

I hope this finds you well, as you may know the king has graciously chosen me to court you in the hopes you may become my wife. I would like to thank you for your bravery in this endeavor. Though I we have not met I know that you will be more beautiful beyond compare. So I write to you this letter, in the hope we may find each others company worthwhile. I look forward to meeting you.

Your suitor, Lord Velten Grey Esq.

He signed it and added a return address then sealed both letters in wax and sent them with haste before returning to his work preparing the evening. The guests would consist of her mother, father, and any siblings she had. Though his reputation preceded him he was sure her parents would be extremely wary and so he would need to prepare to hid his true nature from them. They was sure they would be picky about potential suitors.

Each night leading up to the dinner he would hunt when and where he could, he came across no other vampires but then his kind were not known to publicly announce themselves. He fed more frequently so that he would not feel hungry during the night of the dinner, the last thing he needed was bloodlust in the middle of a dinner. In amongst his nightly outings he received the letter affirming the girls attendance. This being confirmed he chose various cooks to prepare a variety of dishes he hoped would impress her and her family.

He found the whole ordeal strange, normally humans were only another meal but here he was going over minor details to impress them. Himself and Alessandro completed the preparations with a day to spare and it was on this day he received another letter.

At first she believed that the dinner was suppose to take place at her residence. But then the invitation came for them to dine at his house. Now she would have no place to run to or disappear to. She frowned deeply at this idea. She thought about feigning ill, but she'd tried that too many times. No this time she would have to go. The day before the event her mother went about the house in a good mood. It was the tell tale sign that she was full of hope of finally getting rid of her daughter.

A servant brought her a letter quietly. Kanya had despite her demure with most folks was quite liked and even pitied by them. Perhaps it was her independent spirit and not always asking them to do this or that. She was quite certain if her mother knew about it the seal would be broken. Or in this case the letter would have been absent from her sight.

The letter she received was a confirmation of the intention of this event. She sighed and rolled her eyes. The handwriting was very nice for that of a gentlemen it was better than some scribbles she had seen prior. But a reply was required. This man believed he was serving the king. She was his duty, even sight unseen.
The thought of that only fueled her distaste for the entire idea of marriage.

Sitting at her small wooden desk she set about a reply.

Dear Lord Grey,

Although i appreciate your letter and information it presented on your duty to his majesty. Let me inform you that i have no intention on being your wife. This plot sickens me to the core and although i'm sure you are honorable and loyal to the wishes of the crown I follow no mans instructions.

As you may be able to tell from the words above i am of independent thought and will. I will not be broken, beaten or entrapped in the web of being a piece of property that must obey and be bred like cattle.

I am sorry that you have undergone such pains in making tomorrows event so hospitable, as i am sure it will be. But as sure as i am that the sun will rise tomorrow. I am sure there is another lady more suitable to the task of becoming your wife. So rest easy Lord Grey, I'll attempt to make tomorrows event go as quickly and painlessly for the both of us as possible much to my parents dismay i assure you.

Sincerely,

Ms Kanya St. Claire.

Kanya sat for a minute after sealing the letter and the name she had written to struck her. This couldn't possibly be the same Lord Grey in whom she spoke to at the galla. She shrugged, it wouldn't matter if it was. He was a favorite of the ladies he would find one that would fit the mold quite quickly.

"Maria" she whispered motioning with her hand for the servant girl to come to her. "I need you to take this letter to this address quickly and quietly. Do you understand." "yes miss" the girl replied with a slight curtsy. "no one must intercept this letter it is of the most importance" "yes miss" the girl smiled. Maria had been with her in England, and had been the most loyal of all the servants the St. Claire household had employed.

A couple hours later Maria returned to let her know that the letter was safely delivered to the Lords address and given to his servant Alessandro. Kanya could see the girl was smitten with the man she had encountered and it made her smile. She would like to see her friend happy one day but considered that she would only be leaving one life of servitude for another if she was. It was something she didn't understand about her gender. Through all the couples she had observed over the years they always seemed the most happy when they were courting and chasing the idea of love and or security. But once there they seemed bound in a situation of the most misery.

The letter was delivered by a servant girl; Alessandro brought the girl up as Lord grey was getting dressed; having just put his shirt on and donned his shoes when his servant arrived with the girl. She told him her name was Maria and that she had been charged with delivering a letter from her mistress, he stood and thanked her. Maria seemed to go slightly red and squeaked a small thank you before hurrying out the door into the hallway towards the stairs. Alessandro rolled his eyes.

“Another admirer I see M’lord” he said dryly.

“Too smitten to converse once again” Lord grey returned, sighing.

Alessandro had been his servant, friend, and confidant for the better part of 20 years. Lord grey had once offered to turn him but he declined, saying he wanted to die of old age only wishing to have a friend, as the rest of society had shunned him. Alessandro was, by this era’s standards, very ugly and for this he was teased endlessly. That was until Lord grey had found him at a young age and taken mercy on him, training him to become his personal servant. Since then Alessandro had been by his side, always there to offer him some quip or jibe. Lord grey found it comforting, immortality could suck the humor out of you at the best of times.

“Continue checking the preparations for tomorrow night my friend, I shall be in my study”

He made his way out and down to the end of the hall turning into a room on the right; Lord grey’s study. He sat at his desk and carefully open the letter before reading the contents. After he had finished he smiled, if he was not mistaken when he read the name it was signed with this was the sharp-witted woman who had demanded his attention on the boat. There could be no mistake, her strong, forward tone was one he would not forget in a hurry. Before she was simply a girl he had enjoyed sparring words with, now he must be sure to meet her. Not one of the girls he had met in his life, and death, had half as much fire a this one.

He hunted and drank deeply that night, his blood singing as he thought of Kanya, the girl he was sure would finally be of substance and depth. He remembered her blue eyes and auburn hair but struggled to remember the rest of her, not matter, he would meet her in due time. So many girls he had met were interested in money or power or simply the prestige of being called Lady grey, he knew Kanya was not interested in other such things. It was this thought that spurred him on.

The night came and everything was going according to plan, he had arisen just after sunset and quickly gone into the city to drink his fill, then returned to begin the evening. He wore a fine pair stocking and hose on his legs followed by a shirt, waistcoat and cravat. A long black cloak completed the ensemble. fastened from his right shoulder to the left side of his chest covering one arm. As he had no mirrors in the house he had to rely on Alessandro’s assurance that clothing looked fine.

Velten gray was a relatively tall man measuring just over 6 feet, his eyes were a deep green, almost hazel, his long black hair was tied and it came down just below his shoulders. He quickly retracted his fangs to a more suitable length then, passing the dining room on the way to check the food was being prepared. He went down the stairs to greet his guests as Alessandro open the large front doors; this would be a night to remember.

The carriage pulled up to a very large mansion a few miles down the road from where they lived. It had followed a pathway of lit torches that illuminated the houses magnificent beauty. Kanya could almost hear the dollar signs ringing in her mothers head. Knowing the words she wanted to speak but couldn't without giving away the 'secret' of the true purpose of this social call. She found it comical that the intended victim of the kings bestowing informed her already. It was too late for him to withdrawal the invitation, most certainly he would have after getting a glimpse of her rebelliousness.

They exited the carriage and stood for a moment as her mother made fuss over the blue gown she had laid out for her daughter. It irritated Kanya for her mother to be circling around her smoothing out the fabric and adjusting her auburn locks. She let out a sigh of frustration and her father withheld his rolling of the eyes.

As they entered the great hall her mother hewed and hawed over the elegant furnishings and great paintings that lined the walls. Lord Grey was certainly well to do. Kanya smiled as she thought in this home she would want for nothing if she married him except her free will, independent thought, and sanity. A beautiful staircase traveled down and split the room. It was there he stood to greet them.

He was much taller then his sitting form had given him credit for. As introductions were made her eyes simply glanced around the room and gave a half curtsy when her name was called in introduction. Her mother as usual started the talking of what a fine place he had and her father thanked him for the invitation. Kanya still not glancing his direction ignored the conversation around her and rocked lightly on her feet making her 5'7 frame rock slightly.

"Isn't it so Kanya my dear" her mother asked yanking her away from her own private solitude of a moment. "If you say it is mother then it must be" she replied in a flat tone not even sure what it was her mother was referring to.

"Dinner is served" she heard announced from was to be assumed was the entry to the dining room. Before she knew it he was beside her offering his arm. "May I escort you" he said looking down to her. "If you must" she replied flatly taking his arm with the lightest touch possible and was taken toward the dining room in front of her parents who followed behind no doubt hoping that she wouldn't ruin her chance to be no more burden to them. To her dismay her seating was to his right. and her parents where on his left.

So far the lady Kanya Marie St Claire had thoroughly impressed Lord Grey. From the nonchalant manner to the way she made sure was beholden to no one only served to make him more fascinated with her. The parents seemed to only drivel on about this and that, probably seeing his house for all it’s grandeur and not the real treasures it held. They sat and he looked over to Kanya and greeted, she sighed and made some comment about waiting too long for food and why he felt the need to surround himself with such frivolous trappings. Her parents started to scold her but he held out his hand, silencing them.

“You do not think there is anything of value here?”

He continued to listen to her as she railed about his show of wealth and how empty it was of actual substance. The meal came out, here was the hard part. Lord Grey was not served a plate but a ornate looking chalice was brought before him and ‘wine’ poured in it, his guests were also offered wine, but of different kind in identical bottles. As Kanya continued to make other forward opinions regarding exactly what she thought of him and his home in great detail Lord Grey smiled at her, her parents continuing to apologize for their daughter’s behavior. It irked him somewhat as he was enjoying her remarks, scathing as they were, so he formulated a plan. Once dinner was finished he snapped his fingers; Alessandro appeared at the door.

“Please my friend, the young lady’s parents have not had a tour of the house, would you be so kind to show them around.”

He nodded and her parents, who were slightly flustered and welcomed the chance for their daughter and Lord grey to be alone together. They departed to be lead around the house, Lord grey then turned his full attention to the lady. He was not one to give up easily and Kanya was something else entirely, he was now more determined than ever to catch her off guard. Never had he met someone quite like her and he could not let the opportunity pass that he may never again, once her parents had departed he smiled at her.

“What an honour it is to meet a woman like yourself” He said as he drank the last of the 'wine' from his chalice “Truly your are unlike any woman I have ever met, it is a pleasure and a privilege to have met someone of your calibre, who does not fawn over me with empty words as I'm sure you have observed before.”

He gestured towards one of the doors leading from the dining room “Tell me, you seem to be a well read girl, not one prone to spending the day learning how one might better please their husband and country. Would you allow me the pleasure of showing you my library?”

Her remarks at dinner were rude and ungracious. They were in fact exactly how she meant them to be. The goal of course was to ensure she would be last woman he would ever wish to marry. However instead of being offended Lord Grey seemed to be amused. It was if the warning she gave him was simply inspired him to continue with this foolish inclination of marriage.

When he clapped his hands and summoned his servant, she thought for certain he would be sending them away. A soft smile appeared. Then quickly turned to a frown when he sent away her parents for a tour of all they hoped their daughter would become part of. To have such a rich and noble son in law was their dream.

“What an honor it is to meet a woman like yourself” “Truly your are unlike any woman I have ever met, it is a pleasure and a privilege to have met someone of your caliber, who does not fawn over me with empty words as I'm sure you have observed before.”

Her mouth dropped slightly that was not at all what she had expected him to say. She expected some sort of scolding from him on her lack of manners an the impropriety she had shown this evening. She expected that he would tell her once she was his she would learn how to behave if he had to beat it out of her. That she would have been ready for.. Instead he was complimenting her character and declaring what a breath of fresh air it was to not be fawned over. Not only had she observed it, but she had lived it herself. To the men she was something to be possessed and molded.

Before she could quite recover he continued his praise and offered to show her his library. Slowly she rose and took the offered arm and was led into a magnificent room that was wall to wall books. She could spend hours in here learning all kinds of things from the pages of these books. Leaving his arm she walked around the room, her fingers trailed the spines as she read over the titles.

Not looking in his direction she finally spoke. "Do you know Lord Grey why the King has intervened on my behalf to find me a husband?" Not giving him a chance to respond she continued. "It is because like my parents he does not believe i'm of sound mind. They say that i live in a world created by my imagination, that as a child i became frightened and retreated to a tall tale to justify some trauma. So to justify this i created a tale with a happy ending. A false perception of reality i believe they call it.
The story they've created was that i wandered off in the dark woods and became lost. They say i was so frightened that i had to create a tale to save my feeble girlish mind. I on the other hand maintain they wouldn't know their own minds due to the poisoning and limitations that society had limited them to. From the way they think, to the way they eat, and mostly to the way they view woman, their roles, and the ridiculous conceptions over the way a woman should behave. You see Lord Grey I do not belong in this century of limited thinking. Whats more to this day i will maintain that i was cornered by what i have come to believe was a werewolf and saved by what i believe to be a vampire. Now I give you leave to withdraw your intentions of matrimony. As you may see i do not wish to tarnish your honorable reputation by having a wife that will not conform to what society wishes, and could possibly be mentally ill."

Lord Grey watched with much interest as she walk around the library obviously enthralled, his determination had paid off. The lady had not been expecting him to be more interested after her tirade and catching her off guard had given him the perfect opportunity. She finally spoke and he listened intently, as the words fell from her mouth he was enchanted by her confidence. She exuded such strength as she spoke of her disdain for the world of men and how she felt out of turn as almost all men would not view her strength as something beautiful but a disease to be cured. In the century and a half he had been a vampire he had seen this strength in the many queens and duchess’ who had ruled unwaveringly.

His brow furrowed and he took on a more thoughtful look as she spoke of her interest in the world of the supernatural. He listened as she confessed to her traumatic experience being saved by a vampire from a werewolf. Of course everyone she knew had been denied as skepticism by her parents and the king; however Lord Grey believed her. His eyes widened slightly, it may have been a coincidence but it sounded like was that this woman was the same girl he had rescued many years ago. Finally she delivered her ultimatum.

……...Now I give you leave to withdraw your intentions of matrimony. As you may see i do not wish to tarnish your honorable reputation by having a wife that will not conform to what society wishes, and could possibly be mentally ill."[/]

Lord grey was both astounded and intrigued, if in fact this was the girl in question then he understood more than ever her interest in the world of creatures such as himself. If she wasn’t then the danger it would pose to him remained to be seen. Regardless of either; until he knew if she was the same girl he would have to keep her close. Suddenly he smiled, he knew what he would do, this curiosity must be nurtured so that she could arrive at the realisation herself, only then would he find out her true feelings as to his true nature. She stood there, her head held high as she awaited his reply. He stood still and spoke, his voice soft and deep, addressing her by name.

“Kanya, I will speak frankly; I do not think you are mentally ill nor do I believe you would tarnish my reputation should you choose to become my wife. In fact you would increase my reputation tenfold but that is neither here nor there. I believe wholeheartedly in your story and share an interest in fabled creatures of the night, in fact a large section of my library is dedicated to such things”

He gestured to another part of the library.

“I would be honoured if you would grace my halls again, perhaps we could discuss our shared knowledge and interest in the creatures of the night.”

He smiled, this time there was an edge to his smile, a slight wickedness that slipped through despite his best efforts

"best not to tell your parents though, I could not see them condoning this behaviour, shall it be our secret?"

Her eyes did not waver from his as he responded to her statement of fact. That statement had never failed her. In honesty she'd only had to use it twice. It was the final straw as she thought of it. Instead he seemingly heartrendingly excepted it and her eyes followed his hand as he waved in the direction of the books she longed to get a hold of. He was offering her the opportunity to follow her passion without her parents knowledge. Lord Grey was giving her the opportunity to speak freely about the things she believed in without judgement and with feedback from someone that had obviously gained their knowledge through extensive reading.

She stood frozen for a moment as her mind reeled. "I don't know whether to take you seriously Lord Grey or if you bait me with hopes that this will somehow soften my resolve on the issue of marriage. If I were to take you up on this offer the only way my parents would allow me to spend time with you would be with a chaperon, and with the inclination that you were courting me. Just so we're clear Lord Grey, it will only be a rouse if I agree to this. When i no longer wish to be in your presence I will expect that you will graciously bow out saying simply i am not the type of wife you want. May I have your word on that Sir?"

Her eyes were back in his and her stature was firm. The only way she could consider the opportunity he offered is with his full knowledge and understanding that she wasn't leading him on with the hopes of matrimony. She abjured women that played those games and had seen several that would chase a respectable man only to abandon him for one that made more money or had better connections. She would not be that way. She may not be the most subtle of women, but she was honest.

Before he could speak she cocked her head slightly and the corners of her mouth turned up slightly in amusement. "Perhaps you could also explain to me how by marrying me it would increase you reputation ten fold. If I remember our trip on the boat correctly you would be leaving several broken hearts in the wake. So how exactly can one increase their reputation if they marry the mentally ill one?"

She walked gracefully to a chair and sat upon it waiting for him to respond to that statement.

Lord Grey continued to smile for a moment as Kanya stood frozen to the spot, no doubt shocked at his acceptance of what people would usually say she needed to be committed to an asylum for. Finally she spoke and began to clearly outline the details of the agreement, that there would be a chaperon, the courting would only be a rouse. Finally she asked his word that if she chose to leave he would do so with grace and aplomb. He was about to take a breath but was suddenly intrigued as her face transformed to one of amusement.

"Perhaps you could also explain to me how by marrying me it would increase you reputation ten fold. If I remember our trip on the boat correctly you would be leaving several broken hearts in the wake. So how exactly can one increase their reputation if they marry the mentally ill one?"

She then glided to the chair and sat looking at him, the smile lightly playing across her lips as she awaited his response, he was only to kind to oblige.

“Why Ms St Claire, here I was thinking the idea of marriage was but a ruse, however I shall happily indulge your curiosities”

As he strolled to one of the many shelves and selected a medium sized tome, setting it on the table. He stood next to it, his eyes locking with hers.

“Do not confuse reputation with status my dear Kanya. While marrying someone of high status would increase mine exponentially, marrying you would increase both our reputation, let me explain”

With this he open the tome to a picture of Queen Elizabeth the first.

“I’m sure you’re familiar with her majesty may she rest in peace.”

He couldn’t help a small sarcastic tone creep into his voice, he was not a large fan of the monarchy, he saw them more as a means to an end. “Many said that as a woman she was unfit to rule, but she used everything she had and gained a reputation some can only dream about. When I spoke I referred to not only my reputation for being the one who married the so called ‘mentally ill’ woman” his voice dripped with sarcasm.

“But at my side you would be free to build your own kingdom, without cages or confines you would have the freedom to be a queen. Thus our reputation would increase tenfold”

He paused then shut the book and returned it to it’s place.

“So Ms Claire, if at any time you should choose to leave during our arrangement you have my word that I will gracefully accept an you shall be free to leave of your own accord.”

Her eyes narrowed slightly in disbelief of what he was saying. It was a new perspective that she couldn't find a fault in. Her lips pierced and the corners of her mouth turned up once again. "I see" she said lightly "Alright then Lord Grey, I accept the terms we've outlined and look forward to more titillating conversations." She could hear her mothers high pitched voice down the hall and her demure changed to one of a more miserable stance. Standing up she stepped further away and began the appearance of once again being emerged in the titles on the shelves.

Her parents were led in the room and they thanked him immensely for his hospitality. Kanya looked down for a moment and then raised her head up for her eyes to met his with a knowing acknowledgement of the deal they made. "Yes Lord Grey, Thank you for your company. I hope to see you again soon."

Kanya thought her mother was going to drop dead with joy at the words she spoke. Instead she grabbed Kanya and bestowed a most unwelcome and awkward hug upon her. If it were possible to die from utter humility then she was sure at any moment she would do just that. Finally her mother released her and she rolled her eyes in pure annoyance. At least with the deal she made with Lord Grey she would avoiding her parents for some time and it would keep them from meddling.

They said their goodbyes and her mother cackled on and on. Kanya was caught in her own world of vampires and werewolves. It would be nice to have someone to converse with on these matters. She decided that she would view there arrangement as a secret friendship.

After flipping through her book she set it down and went to her desk. Placing her faith with much reservation in his word she started a letter to him.

Dear Lord Grey,

I am curious as to what led you toward the supernatural. As i was only six i remember only a few details. Our manor was in England over looking the road to London. There's a vast amount of woods there referred to as the haunted forest. I only knew them as my recluse.

He wore a hooded cloak, the vampire that is. And his eyes flashed bright yellow when he let out a deep growl that rumbled to my core. Yet i felt safe with him. I didn't fear anything except the horse sized dog. I remember the stench of dead meat when the dog lurched forward.

I still don't know if you believe me or are just humoring me. I suppose upon further conversations i will determine if you meant all that you said.

I am quite sure you will be receiving an invitation to dine with us if you haven't already. I apologize profusely for my mothers exuberance. But you truly brought this upon yourself, you should have ran when given the opportunity.

Kanya let out a slight laugh when she wrote that.

Until we meet again

Kanya St. Claire

She smirked to herself as she sealed the letter and stepped out her door to get Marias attention. Handing it off to her she set her on her way to deliver it to Lord Grey.

Taking the opportunity she decided to go for a walk in the woods. Her parents never checked in on her and her mother was too busy talking about how this could finally be the man to finally make a wife out of their daughter.

The woods were quiet with the occasional sound of animals. The moon shined through the trees.

Lord Grey stood on the balcony, his blood filled chalice in one hand wearing only his pants as he enjoyed the air on his cold pale skin. His thoughts were filled with Kanya, was she really the girl he had saved so many years ago? he had not known how old she was at the time so it was impossible to tell from her age. She was unlike any woman he had ever met, he was going to enjoy their meetings very much. He realised that his plan for her to arrive at the conclusion of what he really was excited him, this intrigued him greatly, he had always been so secretive it felt strange to share it with someone.

His thoughts were interrupted by Alessandro you informed him Kanya’s handmaid had arrived with a letter. Lord Grey smiled, It seemed she was already eager to begin conversing about the world beneath the one she knew. He walked through his house into his study and began to read it. He read the letter twice, once more to be sure, then laid it down on his desk. Her description of the attack matched his memory exactly, there could be no doubt that Kanya was the girl he had saved from the werewolf. He smiled, she would figure it out, but all things in their due time. he picked up his quill then began to pen the reply.

To Kanya St Claire

Thank you for your letter, I knew exactly what it was I was getting into as soon as you returned my first letter, but please, that is neither here nor there.

To answer your question I first found my interest in the dark creatures of the world when was almost killed by a vampire, I was saved at the last moment by a group of gypsies who had made camp nearby. Since then it has been my utmost goal to learn as much as I can.

I love forward to dining at you house, and to our next meeting in which we may discuss in great detail the things that go bump in the night.

My thoughts are with you.

Lord Velten Grey

He sent Alessandro on his way and sat back, it would be sunrise in a few hours. He would need to get some rest before facing Mr and Mrs St Claire.

Kanya had no idea how long she had been in the woods. However, when she returned there was a letter from Lord Grey on her desk. Sitting on the window seat she opened and read it by an oil lamp. She was curious about his encounter with vampires and found she had questions to ask him about it. This would mark one of the first times she was interested in hearing someone speak about something.

In two nights time her parents and requested his presence for dinner. She was surprised it had took them this long to produce an invitation. Her mother in her typical fashion fussed an hawed over the Kanya's apparel and hair being sure it was just so for the visit of her suitor. She had already been scolded several times on how she shouldn't ruin her chances since he was so forgiving about her behavior the other evening.

He was let in by the servants and brought to the sitting room where her parents waited for him. Kanya was no where to be seen. "She's probably taking her time about getting dressed for you" her mother said making excuses for her daughters absence. They made small talk while they waited. Eventually Kanya came in the front door. She had been out in the woods and lost track of time. When she entered the sitting room she looked like a wild girl, Her hair was in disarray and had small bits of leaves in it.

Kanya's mother gave quite a performance of concern and shooed her politely to go get cleaned up and ready for dinner. About an hour later she returned meeting them all in the dining room. For once she let them talk without interrupting not really paying much attention to the conversation. Once in a while her eyes glanced up and saw his eyes directed on her.

With the meal over Kanya asked if he would like to go for a walk around the grounds with her. "Oh do go, take your time" her mother squealed. Taking his arm they strolled out toward the woods.
"So how old were you when you were saved by the gypsies?" she questioned when out of earshot. "And how did you know they were vampires, and did you ever tell anyone?"

Watching Kanya’s parents try to control her was entertaining to say the least, he smiled as they fussed and fidgeted over her, constantly making their apologies to him. She was a sight to behold when she came out, all leaves and wild hair, he had to admit she looked beautiful. He kept his eyes on her throughout the dinner, watching as her eyes darted from her parents to him then back to her food.

He made a show of eating his food but mostly pushed it around the plate saying that it was beautiful food but that he had a sensitive stomach. Afterwards Kanya took his arm to walk around the woods, he enjoyed the silence here, it reminded him of where he had grown up in Germany.

She instantly bombarded him with questions and he chuckled as she asked him about his ‘encounter’ in truth his story was only slightly fiction. The encounter had happened however the part he left out was that he’d been turned by the vampire that attacked him, and the gypsies had rescued him until they learnt what he was.

“I was attacked when I was 18, I remember it well, she was beautiful and wicked. Her teeth were like daggers in the moonlight. Had it not been for the kindness of the gypsies who are knowledgeable about such things. I have told only one person, my friend and faithful servant Alessandro. Since then I have taken it upon myself to learn as much as I can about the creatures that hide in the shadows”

They passed a clearing where the moonlight streamed in and stopped to enjoy the quiet.

“But tell me Miss St Claire, what is it you wish to know exactly?”

“But tell me Miss St Claire, what is it you wish to know exactly?”

"Well Lord Gray, Everything" she stated directly. "There is nothing that isn't worth knowing, and there is so much to learn about everything and anything. Especially about the secrets of the night. The unseen creatures that people believe to just be tales. The books tell us bits and fragments, but the more we read the more pieces we can place together to create a whole."

Her fingers reached out and touched the tree base stroking its rough edges. She seemed to be lost in thought for a moment before she came back. "We both had two very different experiences with vampires. Mine i felt safe and secure, and yours must have been frightening to the core. I use to believe that he'd come back and save me from this cage that i'm imprisoned in. But those were childish little girl dreams."she smiled softly at the memory of her praying for him to rescue her like she was a princess and he was her prince.

He listened and watched intently as she spilled the things she had only dreamed of talking about in honesty with someone, she was hungry for knowledge. She watched as she moved to a nearby tree, stroking it as she became lost in her thoughts, talking about her experience being one of safety and security. He waited till she finished then walked over to her, daring to take her hand in his, she wondered if she could feel the coldness of his skin.

“There are many creatures in the world that lurk in the night, I myself have only met a vampire but from my reading and studying I have learnt about werewolves and witches and ghouls. It is strange to me that you should fine vampires be creatures of protection when they kill for food.” Did she really feel like that? He had never thought of himself as a protective creature.

He let go of her hand and walked around her.

“Tell me of the vampire who saved you, what do you know of him?”

He took her hand in his and she felt the coolness of his touch, but she was lost in listening to his words.
"I know" she replied softly to his comment about them killing for food. "But i don't think they have to kill and if they do, they can choose what type of person dies. I suppose like people there are good an there are bad. Its all about in the choices that we make." she smiled lightly and continued to walk slowly with him.

"I don't remember much about him. Other then i just knew that i was safe with him. It was like I felt that he was my savior. Perhaps that is why I romanticized him. Why i was always protective over my memories and refused to let them force me to forget. Of course i was also six so that should tell you something" she gave a smile and raised the pitch of her voice to lighten the mood.

"I've had to piece my knowledge together from the few books i have been able to collect in secret over the years. That is why i cannot wait to get my hands on your books."

He laughed as she spoke about her need to get her hands on his books, his collection was extensive, there were books on every creature he had met or known to exist. Some were only fairytales but others, like himself, walked among humans each day.

He found that he was extremely excited by the prospect of sharing this knowledge with someone like her, inquisitive and trusting, it amazed him that he had left such an imprint on her. At the time he had thought nothing of it, a small incident, but it was obvious this meant so much more to her, and she was not one to be afraid.

“I wholeheartedly look forward to the night when we may peruse my collection, I have spent many years compiling them and some of them are old beyond compare. But listening I can tell that you have a very vested interest in vampires specifically and so you should focus your attention on these creatures first”

They walked through the woods until the came to a small out outcrop that overlooked her house, she shivered slightly and he offered her his coat.

"Thank you" she replied softly her eyes catching his for as their hands touched on her shoulders. She blushed lightly taking them away and bringing her eye back to the view before them.

"I agree, I think that I do hold more interest in vampires then the rest. Given that i couldn't be expected for you to continue this rouse indefinitely, and that my parents will eventually become suspicious when no engagement is announced. I should probably get started on reading them as soon as possible."

Her mind drifted for a moment then a mischievous smile came to her face. "come i wish to show you something." She headed deeper into the woods with Lord Grey in tow. Until they were deep inside and came upon an abandoned cabin. "If you are willing we could meet in secret here to read and share ideas. No one knows about this place and its almost equal between our homes. We could maintain the rouse in public for a bit. But when that ended we could still have a place to read. I know that is asking a lot of you. If we were discovered it would be a blemish on your reputation. But please think about it."

The cabin was lovely, he had to admit, as she told him of her plan that they would meet here in secret. It was a beautiful thing made from massive logs split and hammered together with great skill. This would do very nicely, a place where they could talk and discuss in secret. he hoped they would be here when she learnt who he truly was. he turned to her, his eyes catching hers and he took her hands.

“This place is beautiful Kanya, I would be honoured if we could share this place, whenever you would like to meet send me a letter stating that you wish to talk in secret and I shall be here waiting for you, with all the knowledge I can carry..”

He held her gaze for a moment then offered his arm.

“Come, your parents will be either wondering where you’ve gotten too, or more likely rubbing their hands together in a anticipation.”

His hands were cool to the touch but before she could respond he spoke again and gave her his arm. There was a kindness to his eyes she pondered about silently as they walked back to the house. She knew he was right about her parents and their eager anticipation.

She wasn't so eager to return to the house however. She wanted more time with him to pick his brain and hear what stories he had about what he learned through out his life. Kanya was finding that Lord Grey was excellent company.

Watching from the front porch she waited until his carriage was no longer in view before heading back up to her room. She glanced at the inkwell and paper and forced herself to lay upon her downy bed. What was happening to her? She was finding herself rejuvenated and happy to have someone that treated her as an equal and could converse about the things that she was most interested in. It only bothered her that they had to have this charade to meet with societies expectations. The things they talked about had to be in secret or it could risk his reputation. But what if there could be another way? she briefly entertained the idea of marrying him so they may continue this anytime they chose to. She quickly dismissed the idea, despite the way he presented himself he was still a man, and she would still be his property.

That night she tossed and turned as she dreamt of him. His eyes the way they caught hers. His hand gently stroking her face. His lips coming toward hers. Then she awoke finding herself gasping for breath. Could she have been holding it waiting for that kiss?

She growled and turned back over in bed trying to get back to sleep. A couple hours later the commotion in the house woke her from the slumber she finally managed to get. An invitation had come for a ball that was to be held that next night. The only redeeming factor was that he may be there. If not she would be showed off like a prize peacock and tossed from one pig farmer to the next.

Lord grey found his thoughts ruled by Kanya, her soft warm hands and her strong inquisitive nature threatened to consume him. His only solace was found in his bloodlust, the sweet taste of another criminal’s life draining was enough to calm him somewhat. His mind turned to marriage, she was the kind of woman to make her out choices in life but the question was; when she found out the truth how much would it change her view, only time would tell. He arrived home that letter to an invitation for a ball, he smiled, she would no doubt be there; her parents would not miss an opportunity for other suitors. Strangely he found that this annoyed him somewhat, he shook his head, she was not his to own, he had lived long enough to know that, still the feeling lingered somewhat.

He began preparations to attend the ball; a carriage was arranged, clothes fitted and other various things were organised to his specifications. Finally the night came and the carriage pulled up to the entrance of the ballroom. Lord grey stepped out, resplendent in his hose and long coat, he wore a white shirt with waistcoat and cravat. His cloak was tied at his shoulders and hung down his arms leaving an opening at the front. The outside of his cloak was black while the inside was a deep red. Heads turned as he exited the carriage towards the entrance, he waved his invitation to the guards, his cloak billowing out behind him as he glided inside.

The ballroom was magnificent, massive marble columns rose from the floor to the high vaulted ceiling, he could not see Kanya, however this was the least of his worries. As soon as he entered he was accosted by two women who thrust themselves upon him trying to engage in small talk, he sighed, he contemplated drinking one of them dry but this was neither the place nor the time. The continued to chatter around him as he searched for Kanya.

For once she was on time and ready to go when her parents called for her. She practically ran down the stairs and lept into the carriage. "You will mind your manners" speech began from her mother as they drove to the mansion. The ride seemed to take forever.

When the carriage pulled up they exited and ascending up the steps. She could hear the music playing and the chatter that seemed to echo off the walls. Her eyes scanned and she couldn't find him. Perhaps he wasn't here yet. Her view was suddenly blocked by a tall man that held out his hand. "no thank you" she said trying to look around him.

Instead of taking her polite refusal he grabbed her arm and began to forcefully pull her out onto the floor. "let go" she demanded "you're hurting me." He stopped and got uncomfortably close to her. "You are a spoiled child that needs a firm hand Kanya St. Claire. You will be mine one way or the other. So you better put a smile on that face of yours before i take you over my knee."

Kanya was outraged and people were starting to stare. With a fierce she stomped down on his foot and slapped him hard across the face. "I will do no such thing you arrogant pig" she cried out. He was fuming to be humiliated as she just did. He was certainly not use to being told no, especially by a woman.

She wasn't certain who he was but her reputation had obviously preceded her. "You will be mine" he declared once again as he straightened out his jacket. "No i think you are delusional, not even if you were the last man would i allow you to have me. If anyone needs to be schooled in etiquette it is you. "

With that she turned and started to walk away only to be grabbed by him once again. "No one tells me no" he announced glaring at her. "Obviously you are deaf because i just did. Now LET GO OF ME!" she demanded. "You're in need of a firm lashing little girl, and when i'm done with you you'll say nothing but yes Master." Kanya couldn't help but let out a laugh. Stomping down on his foot again she let another hard slap go across his face. "Stay away from me." she shouted at him attempting to once again flee this man. But he was too quick grabbing her again and practically dragging her.
