Thousands of trans women and men know they will never be able to afford Gender Reassignment Surgery. They find a way to live with that. If she's suicidal, then she's suicidal. Wouldn't surprise me, being a murderer and all-- a bit on the histrionic side.
On the other hand, if she really does get her surgery because it's a medical necessity, -- I can see a lot of people taking that argument to court with them to force the insurance companies to provide coverage.

A PT scan is the ultimate test for detecting cancer. Sadly medical only covers them when the doctor knows its there or a bunch of other tests are pointing to it.
Think how many lives could be saved if a PT scan was covered by medical and became a annual or bi annual preventative test?
So until that happens for free I don't want to hear a damn thing about them paying for some one deciding they would like to switch sexes because they feel they were born the wrong gender or have emotional issues.

Thank you, Lovecraft, for providing us with such a good example of the very well-known "Your cause is wrong because MINE is more important" argument. But the truth is--it's all the same thing.
Making an argument for something that seems outrageous and outre can function to make other things suddenly seem reasonable.
There is a WHOLE LOT of crucial medical coverage that isn't being provided for in this country. We are among the most backward of first world countries in health care. It's disgusting and depressing.

Have to agree with Stella here. Cancer coverage and sex change coverage aren't vying for the same spot, mutually exclusive, or opposed to each other.

We've been through this before. Genetically, no one can change their XX chromosomes to XY or vice versa. However, we are not our chromosomes, and I will bet a dollar that jimmy has talked to someone who was not born into the sex they now present-- and he never knew it. He only notices when the transformation is less acceptable according to our cultural ideals of feminine or masculine appearance.
In any case, jimmy's opinion about other people's lives is just like his asshole-- of course he has one, but the only time it matters is when he's taking a dump in the living room.

Gender reassignment surgery is strictly cosmetic. I don't believe any medical insurance company would cover it, nor would Medicare or Medicaid, nor should they. The sex organs that would be constructed are non-functional. Even if they build a vagina for her, she would still get fucked in the ass.

They won't, you're right, and that's the argument they will use. Those of us who have to live with the the wrong genitals think of it more as a birth defect, but we don't expect compassion from people like you, or from the people that we pay health insurance money to.
