Street gangs had become so intimidating in Springfield that citizens stopped calling the police on them. And no wonder: gangs were so strong that motorcycle-riding members once cruised a neighborhood with military-style assault rifles strapped to their backs in a show of force. But crime in the gang-infested areas of the Massachusetts city has begun to drop after law enforcement started using a military-style approach of its own.

Besides that's no reason that if cops using military tactics becomes common place why they won't use it in your town. Are you forgetting we live in a country where we caught two (admittedly a bit stupid) terrorists because you can't go many places without being photographed. It was just a matter of backtracking the millions of cameras watching us and it's frankly a small miracle that nobody caught them on IPhone.

Gangsters that are driving down the street as a show of force aren't killing each other. What's more is lets follow your basic logic. Good law abiding citizens need guns to protect themselves from violent criminals. Who do you think is getting killed here? Hell how do you think gangs start in most cases? People live in a bad neighborhood and feel they need to protect themselves. Then other people need to protect themselves and so on and so forth.

But yeah, lets keep letting them kill each other because one guy bought a gun to protect himself from guy two, and guy three bought a bigger gun to protect himself. It's not like the Arms Race ended tragically in Europe. They're all besties!

They CANNOT do their job with out the support of the community, if the citizens are more afraid of the cops than the gangs than the cops are for all intents and purposes neutered. Same thing with counter insurgency....you must have the support of the locals or your not ever getting the terrorist.

They finally realized that and are working to remedy their community relations and it's apparently working out quite well.....no shit.

Nothing has changed...they aren't more militarized....they just pulled their head out of their ass.

I get the impression from reading these posts that many people think the "counterinsurgency" tactics being used are the S.W.A.T. team/weapons/drug house raid.

It is the interaction with the community.

Easy to get confused because the news video people want "exciting" images. If it bleeds, it leads.
