Hi,
have been told to move this over here so........
I wasn't sure where to post this message so if its in the wrong place dont beat me.
i'm new around here so if this has already been done feel free to ignore me.
I used to belong to a science fiction writers group - it was fantastic but life got in the way
anyways, on the principle that everyone wants to be publised eventually, we had a monthly contest based on the idea that you have to grab the publisher/reader in the first page or so or he/she chucks your manuscript in the trash.
so it goes like this - everyone writes (anonymously) 300 words designed to grab the reader by the balls and have them begging for the rest of the story.
the way we controlled it was that the overall winner of the last 3 contests acted as the honourary administrator - they received the entries and compiled them and as such were the only ones that knew who wrote each entry.
all the entries are posted in one document that can be downloaded by all members who then have 2 weeks to vote - the winner gets a virtual trophy and the applause.
it's great fun - really gets your brain going, and a great cure for writers block i've found - i won the contest twice and turned both entries into fairly readable short stories
