Hey guys,

I have a question for you. I just bought a laptop and I am looking into an internet connection for it. Right now I have high speed internet on my desktop and i have just unplugged the wire and plugged it into my laptop for internet access, but i am looking for wireless.

I know I have to buy a wireless router, but I was wondering how much distance does that get you? How close do you have to be to the router for the connection to work?

Also i would love to have internet connection away from home, but i am not sure how to do this. I believe I would need satellite internet, but am I correct?

I don't know about how close to the router...but I usually get my dick about 8 inches from the monitor...and i don't use wires either.. they tend to cut me...

I have a router for my laptop. I live on the bottom floor of a condo complex and I can get out to the other side of the parking lot, but not more than 10 feet past my door the other way. I can use my laptop in any room of my one bedroom condo. My boyfriend's parents have the same exact laptop and wireless system as us and they can also use it in any room of their considderably larger house. I'm not sure how far outside they can go. I once noticed that my connection was really slow and found out that I was using someone else's router, but I don't know where that one is. I haven't had that problem since we encrypted. I don't know anything about haveing a satelite connection. It would be nice but not something I'd be willing to pay for at the moment.

My understanding is a standard router will get you about 200 feet, roughly the same as a cordless phone. If you aren't trying to go that far from your desktop you can just get a hub really cheap, but I LOVE my wireless and would highly recommend it.

What kind of satellite internet do you mean? And where are you trying to go?

Almost any decent hotel (or Starbucks, or midscale grocery store with a cafe, etc.) will let you tap into their wireless network free or for a nominal fee. Depending on your ISP you may also still be able to dial up if a wireless network is unavailable. You can also try tapping in via your cell phone.

Ah, finally a question I can answer!

Your range of the wireless router tends to vary with the obstacles in between your computer and the router. Typically though they will range between 200-800 feet being close to the maximum.

I'm currently running the US Robotics 8054 and have not had any problems anywhere in the 3 story house with the router in the basement.

No, you don't need satellite internet, you can sign up for a cellular broadband service -- which is much like connecting to your wireless network at home or conncting to an internet cafe's or hotel's wireless system, although I wouldn't use the same wireless-networking card. The hardware rquirements and cost will dpend on what cellular companies serve your area and whether you plan on "roaming;" pretty much the same issues you have to consider with your cell phone service.

A wireless router will definitely keep you online with a strong connection in your home and in the area right around it. It changed my life, I love it.

But do look into encription, I can surf on my laptop at work on the company downstairs wifi.

I can scan their network when I do and although I have warned them 3 or 4 times they have done nothing about it.

When someone rips all their custumer info there will be hell to pay.
