Just having Doyle in the room made her feel safer. But she was worried about him. He looked tired and she was afraid that he might have been drinking too much. She knew him well enough to know that he did not handle well when limits were put on himself.
But he seemed to hesitate, talking about IA in general at first. And he seemed to understand her unspoken assurances. Something bothered him and she patiently waited. Eventually he would tell her.
Becca. She closed her eyes and pain washed across her face. The poor woman. No one deserved the torture that she must have endured at the hands of that madman. And all because of her. Rae would hate her. She squeezed his hand, hoping that he understood. So much could not be said in the open area of a hospital. And for him to have her body left at his house...she was glad that he had sent his wife away, or she too would have been added to his carnage. She was glad that Danny and Pierce had finally folded and given up what they knew. Otherwise she would be dead, just another statistic.
...Also, I'm leaving Rae.
He didn’t sound sad. He sounded tired. She wasn’t egotistical enough to think that she was the cause. After all, she wasn’t the first woman that he had cheated on Rae with. No, she suspected that this had been a long time coming before she even came on the scene.
And then he mentioned work and upcoming cases, and she was glad. Work would probably be best for her. As to what would happen to Pierce, the egotistical prick should have the book thrown at him.
Finally the conversation from him wound down and as he settled down beside her, she felt it necessary to let him know when she would be released.
“They say that I can probably go home in a couple of days. I can’t go back to work for a bit but it will be soon if I have a say. They really want someone to stay with me. I uh...well, bad dreams. You know.”
Hesitantly, she began to tell him about the ordeal. The torture. The rape. Being blindfolded and gagged. The stun gun. Being tied up the whole time. She hated telling him but she also understood that without him knowing, it would always be between them. At first, her voice sounded hollow as she spoke, as if reciting the atrocities he had done to her had actually happened to someone else. The sores on her body were proof that that wasn’t true. She could remember every moment.
“He kept wondering if he was getting me pregnant. That’s how I knew that it was someone that I had never slept with. Someone that didn’t know me well. Slowly he gave clues without realizing it. It really pissed him that I figured it all out.”
Tears started to fall. “I kept praying for you to find me. I knew that if someone could, it would be you.”
He seemed to understand that for the time being, she was a bit emotional. She promised him that eventually she would calm down.
For the next couple of days, he seemed to be with her constantly except when the doctor would see her or her time with the psychiatrist. Finally, three days later, she was released from the hospital and allowed to be taken home. She was looking forward to heading home. Home, where she could be herself. And so could Doyle.
