Ikea's Dutch Stores Shut After Bombs Found, Defused
By Paul Gallagher
AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Police sealed off 10 IKEA stores in the Netherlands Wednesday and blew up a suspect package after at least two bombs were found at branches of the world's biggest furniture retailer.
All IKEA's Dutch stores were closed and its 4,000 employees told to stay at home after explosive devices were discovered at its stores in Amsterdam and in Sliedrecht in the southwest of the country and defused Tuesday, a company spokeswoman said.
"It's terrible that this is happening," said IKEA spokeswoman Helen van Trearum. "We decided together with the police because of safety reasons that the company's stores in the Netherlands would be closed today."
The head office of Dutch news agency ANP in Rijswijk, near The Hague (news - web sites), was also evacuated after police received a warning that a bomb might have been planted in the building.
The IKEA stores had been bracing for a flood of shoppers in the busy run-up to the Christmas holidays. Workers at IKEA's busy Amsterdam branch were turned back at the main entrance.
Dutch officials said there was no reason to suspect a terror link. "There are no indications of that. We want to emphatically reject that idea," ANP quoted Justice Ministry spokeswoman Marianne Bloos as saying.
Police said the bombs were taken to police stations to be defused. The Sliedrecht device exploded at the police station there, inflicting minor injuries on two police officers.
A bomb disposal squad carried out a controlled explosion on a suspect package at an IKEA store in Utrecht, police said.
Police, the fire brigade and bomb disposal experts -- wearing protective clothing and helmets -- sealed off the store. The nearby section of motorway was closed, snarling rush-hour traffic.
Police have not yet indicated how they received the warnings about the explosive devices.
IKEA, which started in a small Swedish farming village in 1943 and now has stores in more than 30 countries worldwide, sells a huge range of products including beds, sofas, kitchen equipment, lighting and toys.
The company, which opened its first store in the Netherlands in 1979, generates sales of around $11 billion dollars a year around the world. IKEA's headquarters in Sweden could not be reached for immediate comment.
