"The Spratly Islands consist of more than 100 small islands or reefs. They are surrounded by rich fishing grounds and potentially by gas and oil deposits. They are claimed in their entirety by China, Taiwan, and Vietnam, while portions are claimed by Malaysia and the Philippines. About 45 islands are occupied by relatively small numbers of military forces from China, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Vietnam. Brunei has established a fishing zone that overlaps a southern reef but has not made any formal claim.

... Economic activity is limited to commercial fishing. The proximity to nearby oil- and gas-producing sedimentary basins suggests the potential for oil and gas deposits, but the region is largely unexplored. There are no reliable estimates of potential reserves. Commercial exploitation has yet to be developed..."

July 25 (Bloomberg) -- China’s Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said the U.S. shouldn’t “internationalize” the issue of the South China Sea where Chinese territorial claims conflict with other nations.

“What outcome can there be if the issue is internationalized and multi-lateralized?” Yang said, according to a statement posted on China’s Foreign Ministry website today. “It can only make matters worse and more difficult to solve.”

The ministry said Yang made his comments at last week’s meeting of foreign ministers attending a security forum of the Association of Southeast Asian nations in Hanoi.

Yang was responding to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton who said resolving territorial disputes off China’s southern coast is “a leading diplomatic priority,” signaling her intention to intercede in the region.

Clinton’s “seemingly fair” comments are “virtually an attack on China,” China’s Foreign Ministry’s statement said, adding there is “no problem” with the freedom of navigation and security in the South China Sea.

“International practice shows that the best way to resolve these types of disputes is direct bilateral negotiations between the countries involved,” Yang said in the statement.

The Chinese government disputed the claims of Vietnam and Malaysia to part of the South China Sea’s Spratly Islands when it submitted a map to the United Nations last year asserting ownership over most of the sea.

Brunei, the Philippines and Taiwan also lay claim to all or part of the island chain, which may contain oil and gas reserves.

“Asia is rising and we have our own dignity,” Yang said in the statement. “Asian countries can treat each other with equality and mutual respect, and we can address each others’ concerns properly.”

Is that compound interest?

I don't understand the point of this thread.

I don't understand the point of any thread unless someone offers me ciggies.

{Insert rant about the change to low tar and low nicotine ciggies and that only the illegally imported fake cigarettes have any taste.

Where are the brands of my youth such as Capstan Full Tar, Piccadilly No.1, Balkan Sobranie, Three Castles and Passing Clouds?

Modern legal ciggies are like puffing steam and no one, except me, has a real smoker's cough. The sounds of choking have passed almost as much as the clop of horses' hooves (and you could make ciggies out of horse-shit if you were desperate enough - I was!) and clanging trams.)}

I'm not writing any more unless someone gives me ciggies...

Thanks Og. Oh good - untipped Senior Service - nearly as good as hand-rolled pipe baccy.

{Sounds of contented puffing.}
