Connected Stories

I've been writing some individual stories that are connected to each other. My first submission was an eight part story about a couple that was able to magically switch bodies with each other. The idea came about one day when, after sex, my wife asked me what it was like to have a cock and fuck a woman. She was commenting on how in control I was and how cool that must be. I took the idea and ran with it, and ended up with a story that best fit into only one category.

I introduced several other characters in that story, which allowed me to branch off into different categories with stories that can stand on their own, but also connect back to the original story and characters. It's kind of an amusing exercise and it gives me the opportunity to have readers that probably would never go into the category of the original story. Hell, I don't read stories in that category myself! While I have written a few other stories, a couple of them based upon true events, continuing to write about the escapades of the same characters has been a lot of fun.

Has anyone else tried this?

Yes, I write stories that are connected, both by characters and events. I agree that it's fun to do.

Yes, I like taking a supporting character in one story and making them a lead in another, or vice versa, keeping the stories themselves self-contained. I like the broader sense of continuity and depth it provides, sort of like Easter Eggs for regular readers, and they seem to like it.

Wow, I'm currently also writing a story like that.

My plan is to make an overarching saga, that will connect characters in my stories.

Like in the first series I am currently writing, which is called "Filius" (meaning son in Latin), is about a son finding out that his mother is cheating with his classmate (who happens to be a black alpha male). It's written in the first-person point-of-view.

The next one I'm planning to make will be called "Mater", which be in the point-of-view of the mother instead.

Then next will be the father's. Lastly, will be the classmate.

I also plan to write spin-offs involving the minor characters involve in the first four stories I mentioned.

So technically, it's like creating a world.

It's good to know there are other writers here at Literotica that share the same mindset. Kudos to us! =p

I really enjoy connected stories. It's great to edit them as well.

This is one of those devices I've always wanted to use, but my stories are usually so different in terms of placement and substance that I have a hard time coming up with ways to do it.

Way back when I was in my early twenties, I had the idea of writing a series of stories a la Twin Peaks style. The idea was that each one could stand on its own, but the characters I used in each one would all show up now and then in some of the others. I even went so far as to write up a list of all the "interesting" people in my quirky little town and their characterizations, quirks, and ambitions.

Never got around to writing any of the stories, though . . . .

It's never too late, mate. Start writing one chapter, and see where it goes...

I've written three chapters now, and in the process of writing another.

Just write, write and write. Hopefully, your creative juices gets flowing.

Oh, all of my stories in Danica's world as Dark. My Magic of the Wood series as Les.

I do a little with connected stories *laugh*

I have an immense cast of characters in Danica's world, because many of them have been around since the 80s, living out their lives at the whim of a 20-sided die. I can't even give a fraction of them screen time in one story, so they pretty much all get a turn at a starring role.

Currently, that's Cerebus "Mindblind" Blackhawk, in "Lowborn".

Magic of the Wood is generational. Every story centers on a new member of the family, but there are always going to be cameos and supporting cast roles for those who've had their time in the spotlight as main characters in earlier stories.

Considering they're all basically immortal once they end up in the family, they'll be making appearances for many, many years to come :p I took great pains to get a funeral service director and a doctor to write death certificates into the family to keep that hidden from the wider world ;)

This is a cool concept when done well. By "done well," I mean that the characters maintain their distinctiveness and individuality when they take over the spot light. In the hands of lesser authors the voices blend when the focus shifts. It's the same person with a different name. But a skilled author with well-defined characters enriches the fictional world and adds depth when formerly minor personas are given a bigger stage.

The interesting trick that I still haven't seen done here would be to elevate a supporting character to star status and relegate the former lead to a supporting role. Usually when it is done the former lead is omitted entirely.

I did it with a nonerotic Christmas contest a few years ago--a series all with "Second" in the title.

I just recently started doing something like this in all of my stories. Not the exact same thing, mind you. I wrote a story a while back in the Mature category involving a strong female role who wasn't the main character or POV character who had a reputation for being a mischievous slut or character of I'll repute in general. The story did well because of this character, and she became one of my favorites as she was for the fans of the story.

Now she lived in a subdivision where the story took place, so her type of personality stood out among the do gooders of the neighborhood. I completed a horror story recently that also took place in a subdivision, and on a second's chance, I made mention to the female character from my other story, that she lived down the way and was going about her business in her own style.

Now only two people have noticed this "cameo" bit they said that they really enjoyed it. Just a little nod to those who frequent my stories, and I've now started to do this with other stories of mine, including tiny appearances or mentions of other characters or happenings from completely other stories.

It ain't a big deal, but its sort of a nod to those who read my stories. And I feel like it forms this sort of cohesive universe that the readers are indulging in.

A have a CIA control officer pop up in many of my spy stories. Haven't done a story with him as protagonist, but now probably will.

Yes, I am in the process of doing this now. All my stories have a continuing thread of characters, and the ones to come will have, also.
