Congrats to the 11th Annual Reader's Choice Winners!

I had to laugh when I saw the following. 11 W’s awarded based on a total of 17 votes! There were less votes cast over six weeks than there were stories or authors entered in the seven categories!

Apparently soular is hard at work writing foreign language versions of her stories for the 2010 contest.

A contest in which almost no one voted--and certainly didn't buzz about it on the boards. A contest in which the writer taking half the categories (including "most influential writer") only contributed 8 chapters of essentially 2 stories in all of 2009 and who only has 28 chapters of 3 stories posted here for all time?

Can there be a contest that is any more of a joke than this?

Time to shoot this sucker dead, I think.

The premises of contests on Lit. are about as lame and sophomoric as you can get. And writers and readers alike think a win in one of these is a reflection of either their writing prowess or the quality of their stories? *wow*

Oh, I'm feeling the love in here! ;)

Congrats, winners :)

Well, yes, I can understand you not understanding the difference between promotion and a contest based on the quality of the story and not caring that the emphasis on good writing in contests is being completely corrupted and thrown out the window by self-promotion.

Can't help it if I think what is important continues to be the quality of the writing and storytelling. It's been a long time since I was in high school.

Going back to this "Most Influential" writer who has two completed stories and one still running to cover all time on this Web site--all in the same category and who has not, to my knowledge, given a peep on writing issues on this forum--or rather going to the folks who have promoted her in this position for the last two years.

Yes, those of you who voted and campaigned for Soular. I'd be ever so interested in hearing from you what exactly she influenced in you as a writer to promote her for this honor? What have you written and posted here? As far as I can see she's a good writer. But she's no Dr. M. (just to name one). What exactly can I see in your own writing development that you got from a writer who has only two and a half stories here for all time--all in a single minor category--and no evidence at all of a writing mentoring footprint here?

What is in in what Soular has posted here that should have other developing Lit. writers going to her to experience this influence?

What I mean is if you have issues with it then start a thread of such, don't rain on the congratuary parade! I'm not going to engage in anything else in this thread.

So way to go,winners!

Tough. This is where the discussion is. I can see why you want to push it under the carpet, though.

Or have I missed something here? Can Soular justify corrupting short stort contests and duping everyone she can because she's doing it all to sell her books for personal gain too? Oh, that would be a different matter, wouldn't it?

Listen, I have picked on soular a little bit the last two years. But it doesn’t mean she’s a bad person or anything. She simply wanted what a lot of other writers here at LIT wanted and had the gumption to go out and get it.

Last year she ran a brilliant campaign to be named MOST INFLUENTIAL WRITER and would have easily won the award if all of AHland (including ace) hadn’t mounted a furious last minute crusade to push her aside and name one of their own MIW (btw last year’s winner is the threadmaster of this thread and also appears to be congratulating herself).

The fact that soular came back and fought again does her credit. I salute her victory.

ace and I didn’t agree on what MOST INFLUENTIAL WRITER means last year. Nor would we agree now. But whatever your definition of the term I think that most observers would agree that the list of ten nominees we were presented with didn’t meet even the minimum criteria of any definition.

I do agree with ace that these ANNUAL AWARDS are dead in the water. The whole system has to be dramatically altered or the awards should be cancelled.

The pitiful vote totals don’t lie…

Author of the MOST COMMENTED on
and the MOST VOTED on story on LITEROTICA

I'd also like to congratulate alwayswantedto

He produced an amazing body of work in 2009 and quite frankly should have been nominated for MIW. His popularity with the LITEROTICA reading public is clearly shown by how fast he's rocketed up the FAVORITE AUTHORS list.

Yep, in an effort to make the annual "Most Influential" honor deserve something more than a horselaugh, last year I did nominate and campaign for Selena Kitt. In 2008 she launched a publishing house (and now two) that gave a whole bunch of writers here an in into the world of for-pay e-booking. That's the sort of stuff that's influential in a writer's development in the real world rather than the Lit. world of fantasy and lemmings. The 2009 contest? Yeah, right.

Congrats to all of the winners and a nod of appreciation to those that support them.:)

A congratulatory  for the winners from the good little witch.

This contest actually used to mean something. Well, at least to the degree a Lit contest CAN mean something. ;) I've been all for changes from the beginning but it's not my site so you kind of just have to go with it, after you've made your wishes known.

But in the past year or so, people have been pissing (among other things) in the Lit pool big-time in ways and degrees this community hasn't been subject to before. Some have stuck it out and talked around the problem-folks. Others have just left because they couldn't stand the stink.

But the lackluster response to this year's polls (which we all know, are mostly voted on by either AH writers or fans of Lit writers who have notified their fan base of the poll in the first place) is very telling about how people feel about the Author's Hangout.

And that's really sad. :(

Agreed.

Ditto.

I'd prefer it if they didn't bother with the polls. Treat it the same as the monthly contests - but as a yearly one for each category. Highlight the top 5 stories in each category to bring them to the attention of anyone who might have missed them, but take the final score as the actual moderated voted score they've accrued during the year.
