Stupid question of the day: What's the difference between the Monthly Reader Awards and the Monthly Nominations?

Monthly Reader Awards are the top three stories, regardless of category, and they win cash prizes.

Monthly Nominations are the top story in each category. At the end of the year they take the top scoring among those (I think 5 for each category?) to be voted on in the year end Reader's Choice category awards.
