Condescending Terms of Endearment

Not talking down, exactly, but I always cringe when someone calls me a 'nice guy.'

Oh, and 'voice of reason'... ptooey... <glaring at Cherry> ;)

I do not think that it is the word or the term that stings, but the speaker and the tone of voice used. Too many terms are thrown around as offensive in some circles and endearment in others. Perception is reality. Do you the reciever perceive condescension?

Are there any?

This came to mind from something in another thread (and NO, I am NOT flaming the person who said it!!).

Whatever my love calls me always fits the moment (or lifts my spririts), and until him I used to believe I wouldn't care for any guy to call me "babe" or "sweetie".

I still cringe a bit though when a man I have just met (even if he's "attached" to another lady) starts with the "babes", "chicks" and "honeys".!

LOL...finally you start a thread that cracks me up.. good job!

None really bother me. Its when people who don't know me call me things like babe...don't call me babe, I'm not your babe! Get to know me little before you start calling me terms of endearment.

On the other hand, I call lots of people hon, darlin or sweetness..but I do usually know them first. :)

LMAO!

Estevie Look up one line...
:D
I usually call some one "Babe" when I want to get on their nerves (yes... I know I'm a brat)

I'm perhaps guilty both offline and on, of using some terms that some find "insulting". In the lounge and hot tub, I use "cutie" quite often. Unfortunately, I can't explain all the time when I use the term, its more of a reflection of the ladies' personalities, than their "look". I have no idea what most of the ladies "look like" but if their wit and creativity makes me smile........they become a cutie. However, its a knee jerk reaction by some who must hate : BABE, Cutie, Hon, etc. offline as well.

In high school, and college (played two sports) I morphed from enjoying the term: JOCK to hating it. It became synonomous with "Stupidity" or "Cave Man mentality"......so I would ask others to use the term "Athletic' instead....

Smiles

Dear.

I hate that word.

I dont know if anyone in a marriage or long term relationship hasnt heard..."Yes,dear" in a snide,or sneering,or heaven forbid like the person is totally beaten and its said along with a long sigh.

Geez...

For some reason I have always hated "shit for brains", although it may be my interpretation of the inflection. ;)

I think here at Lit where we come from so many cultures there will be words that mean something else to others. You have to be much more tolerant of what 'terms' people write on the net than if they were standing in the same room with you.

What...?... It was a pet name that Mum gave me when I was a kid...

... stop laughing... it hurt... ;) :D

Still LMAO at "Shit for brains" :)

terms of enderament?

I absolutely detest the term "old lady", which is used very frequently around here to refer to a wife or girlfriend. If any guy ever calls me that I will wallup him even if I'm a 100.

Oh yeah I hate the term, "The Mrs". My SO knows better than to use that one. Even if he knows his Karate, I would still kick the crap out of him, lol.

Sometimes it's not what is said but how it's said...
the sweetest word can take on the most sarcastic terms...

I just greet most of the females with a friendly, "Hey WOMAN.." and a smile. Just fun and flirty.
