My son's girl friend has a compaq 700amd presario with windows me. The problem is it will sign on internet but will not let you go to sites. I tried to restore but it will not work. I have also tried to use restore disk and it says contact compact. Please any help would be great.

It sounds like the problem lies within the ISP itself. When you connect do you get the network icon in the system tray (the two computers)? It could be that the browser is not configured properly.

Next time you connect go into a dos prompt and type something like

"ping google.ca" or "ping miscrosoft.com" and see if you get a reply. If you do I would say it's the browser. If you don't get a reply it's probably the ISP's fault.

I hooked the computer up and set it up with my isp and did the same thing. Compaq said I need new restore disk but just open the ones that came with computer and they did not work. I put my hardrive in it but it would not read it.

That is a some what odd condition. What browser are you using?

Noting that i had some problems with IE6.0 and win98se.

Check your security settings? do you have a firewall?

I do not have IE6.0 anymore!

It has windows ME and ie5.o. I was hoping someone could help me out. Compaq said to get new restore disks, i just open these out of there package and did not work. Is there away to get around the stuff compaq loads so i could my harddrive?

Nope, Compaq and HP both load part of the BIOS Settings on the primary Hard drive in part of the boot sector and your drive will only work as a slave drive because it doesn't have the necessary boot info for a Compaq on it.

Your problem does NOT sound like an Operating System Problem that the Restore Disks will fix.

You can try downloading an upgrade version of IE5.0 or IE5.5 or even IE6.0 which will work with Win ME to your system and transfer the install file to hers.

Or try downloading a completely different browser, like mozilla or Netscape to your system and copying it to hers.
