The keys under my laptop fanbelt have melted.

I called the manufacturer who said that they they don't cover "customer-inflicted" damage.
But I told them that it wasn't my fault (really it wasn't).
Now they're saying that repairs could be anywhere from $199 - $1100! (Closer to the $1100).

I can't use the computer in this condition as I'm barely getting the keys to type at all.

They suggest that I send it in to their HQ but I'm wondering if I should try to fix it independently.

HELP!!! (I can't be without Lit. for three weeks)

Thoughts? Suggestions? I could use some. :(

Laptop repairs are the most problematic of all computer problems. Unlike tower units, laptops have custom fitted components designed to fit precisely into the package.

My suggestion would be to call around to some of the computer shops in your area and see if anyone is willing to take a crack at it. I suspect you're probably going to find none of them want to though. In the end you may have no recourse but to return the unit to the manufacturer for repair.

Find out the exact make/model from the tag on the bottom, and then start calling. You're looking for a place with spare parts. They do exist; I can think of at least 3 places in Indy that have a good chance of being able to help.

Reasonable spare parts come from other laptops that have gone boom.

Expensive spare parts come from the manufacture.

SO if you're lucky, you'll find a place that has a similar model to yours where the motherboard or display has gone flakey and they are keeping the carcus for spare parts.

I had a guy who once brought me 5 busted laptops (he liked to buy the same model over and over) and we pieced together 3 working ones. A new hard disk make the 4th one go too.

It sort of defeats the purpose of a laptop, but how about using a ps2 keyboard until you can get the laptop fixed?

Thank you for the great responses everyone. :rose:
There's so much to think about right now, my head is reeling.
We'll see what happens.
