A pal of mine asked me for help with re-formatting his harddrive, which I agreed to, seeing as I have done it several times before, and it shouldn't be a problem - except that he doesn't have a diskdrive, only a CD-drive.

How do I create a start disk on a CD?

Why would you need that? Does he or you have a bootable Win installation cd? Boot from that, it should have all the tools you need to reformat and reinstall.

If not, burn the content of a statup floppy on a cd-r.

Svenska? By disk drive I assume you mean floppy disk drive.

Anyhow, one of the original installation CDs of the operating system should be usable as a startup disk. I believe that you can then use that CD to reformat the hard drive.

Unfortunately, your friends computer is probably a Windows machine, and me being a Mac user, don't know how to start up the machine from CD.

As I used to say when I was a computer programmer, check the manual. It should have all the information you need.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Re-format through installation CD's?

Isn't that too easy?

I'll go over there and see if that will work. In the mean time, I have another question: why have I learned to do this the hard way, if all I needed was a CD and a reading ability?

Don't know the answer to that one Svenska. It seems to be a fairly common human trait though.

P.S. Your friend has remembered to back up all his important data? Reformatting will cause all data to be lost.

OK, the computer has been re-formatted, Windows XP has been re-installed, and now he has to take the damned thing to the shop to have it fixed, because the drive for the network card was lost in the re-formatting process, and he didn't have a CD with drives and utilities, like I have for my computer, and since the computers are so different from each other, my drives don't work on his computer.

Ah, well. He may not have any internet, nor any working computer for that matter, for about a week, and it will cost him a few hundred krona's, but on the plus side I installed an extra feature for him, Nero Burning Rom, so now he can burn back-ups in the future.:)

The problem with an abacus is that the only porn you get to watch on it are those little pebbles sliding back and forth over the stick.

Nice action, but where's the plot?

S'va,
Do what I would do: ask someone who has a European Computer Driving Licence.
