lol ok i know this board isnt for things like this but ive seen it here in the past.ok the question i have is for some reason whenever i start my computer one of the processes that start automatically is called CPUIDLE.EXE and it keeps my CPU usage at 100% all the time.i can end the process but i cant figure out why it loads.i checked in msconfig and its not listed in the startup options.so does anyone know how to disable it or what it even is for that matter since i never noticed it before until a week or so ago.im running windows XP PRO.thanks in advanced

Be very careful about messing around with this program.

I did a search on yahoo using CPUIDLE.EXE

Here are a couple of links if they work.

Both links work.

From your first link:
CpuIdle is Shareware with a free 30 day trial and a $20 registration fee if you choose to keep it. Money well spent.

glock800,
If you didn't specifically install cpuidle, then it probably came from the manufaturer of your system, and was included because they thought that it was necessary to keep the CPU temperature under control.

The links do say that the program does skew the Windows system monitor readings and includes it's own system monitor.

Unless it is interfering with the resources needed by other programs you're running, I'd leave it alone. Removing it doesn't seem like it would be directly harmful to your system, but it might decrease the life-span of your system by letting the CPU run hotter than it should.

According to the second link, that is a program that helps cool your CPU. If you remove it all that is cooling it is the fan/heatsink. From what I understand, cpuidle lessens the strain of the cpu and is especially good for people who like overclocking. For a better answer, try asking on www.sharkyforums.com

yes but the wierd thing is that it wasnt originally on my system.ive had my PC since when windows ME came out and upgraded it and installed XP pro on it.the CPUIDLE was never there until recently and the only new programs i installed were office XP and easy cd and dvd creator 6,and imesh version 4.i dont know where it suddenly came from but it interferes with the system resources alot.my PC was running fast and smooth but since the CPUidle showed up my CPU is constantly running at 90-100% and i end the task and everything is back to normal.very weird:confused:

Is there any chance someone else might have installed it?

Check the Add/Remove Programs for a removal link.

If it's not on the Add/remove list, it might be a trojan masquerading as CpuIdle and should be removed.

DrWatson should show you where it's loading from (Win.ini, Registry, startup directory, etc) and where it's located on your disk.

The Search Files and Folders function should find the executable file so you can delete it, but simply deleting it might cause a perpetual error message that it can't be found -- you need to find the registry key or other command that loads it too.

im positve no one installed it im the only user on my PC and i dont let people use it since its for work purposes and has to much vital stuff on it to risk losing.i have norton antivirus 2003 completely updated and it hasnt detected a virus.it isnt on my add/remove list.i did a search and its located in the

C:\windows\system32\drivers\ect\cpuidle

it says its an application its 192kb.i dont know where it came from or why it suddely activated but its becoming a pain.when i disable it everything works fine.i doubt my CPU temp is a problem its only a 750MHZ processor with the cooling fan that came pre installed when i purchased the pc

Sound slike you need to edit your registry to remove it manully.

Warning: screwing up your registry can cause all sorts of problems -- get a professional to remove it if you're at all unsure of what you're doing.

First, take a snapshot with DrWatson to find out what is loading it. I suspect it is in the Machine Service section of your registry, but it doesn't have to be.

Once you've determined where it's loading from, you can delete the applicable Registry Keys to stop it from loading and delete the EXE file from your disk.

(DrWatson is Windows diagnostic that collects information about your system to send to MS technicians if you're having problems. See your help menu for details.)

yes i know what you mean about screwing up the registry.ive had to edit my registry before so i know what im doing once i find out where its loading from.i also know you should make a backup of your registry before you edit it just to be safe.thanks for the help

EDIT-ok i found where cpuidle is located.when i go to msconfig in the services tab its there and has a check beside it.i assume removing the check will disable it?i just wanted to check first because i never messed with anything in the services tab.thanks for the help:)

Yep, uncheck it and it should go away.
