Juspar can't get online, so he's asked me to post for help.

He was online this afternoon, when all of a sudden he got an error message on the screen saying:

Windows Socket Error [11001] ASync lookup

It disconnected his AIM, and wouldn't allow him to use his browser.

He disconnected to reboot and now it won't let him online at all now... and the error message won't go away. (It's a pop up box, not the blue screen)

Does anyone know what this means, and what he should do to fix it?

What does he use to connect to the 'Net? If it's a program (like Juno or AOL) try reinstalling. If it's a tradition ISP (dial-up networking) try reinstalling the connection. Might want to scan for viri too, as something may have infected the mswinsck.dll file. Also, if none of the above works, he should try downloading and replacing the Windows Socket DLL/OCX. If none of that works, he should try reinstalling his OS (not a clean reinstall, just install over the current installation).

He's on DSL.

He's run Dr. Watson and it found nothing.

He hasn't done a virus check yet.

Anything else?

Holy shit, I just looked at your first link Freaky. It doesn't sound good :(

on the second link I gave you someone suggested the cleaner to fix the problem

that was posted the other day.. so I'm assuming this is probably a new trojan out running it's course..

I had the same problem, and instead of rushing in and deleting all these files, I kept searching and found a little trojan killer called The Cleaner at www.moosoft.com. There's a 30 day trial version available. I ran it and it came up with two viruses, Palukka and MultiCQ. It's probable that Palukka is the one which causes the socket errors but I'm not too sure. However The Cleaner got rid of the viruses and now my socket error problem is fixed. I hope that's of some help.

That note about "The Cleaner" was on both of those boards.

That's from one of the boards that Freakygurl posted a link to (BTW, like your av freaky, you're very cute ;) ). Maybe try getting a different virus scan (rather than Norton) and scanning. And maybe do a Norton scan also.

Am I the only one who updates my Win and AV regularly?

No Guru.. my AV is updated every 4 hours.. :D (ok that is probably way more than needed but that is how McAfee had it set up so I left it.. lol)

My poor little computer is so tight I can't even get file transfers from MSN.. LOL I recieved more than one virus from MSN.. I won't let that happen again

Apparently so Guru :D

How do I do that?

Will a virus scan pick up trojans? Stupid question I know, but I'm a dork.

tell him to download the cleaner.. from the link I posted above. It will find out if he has a trojan. It's free for 30 days

Every four hours? I wish I could have sex every four hours, but I'm happy to have my AV updated once a week!

And, before you berate me for that, I have *never* had a virus! (My son got one, but that's another tale!)

I keep my Internet Security Zones at the highest level, and *never* open an unknown attachment.

Would you "open" my "attachment?"

I get viri every few months. It doesn't bother me that much. I just delete them or format my harddrive (gives me an excuse not to wait anymore).

Why is it that all the pretty women live away from me?

yeah.. Mcafee online has it set up to auto update every four hours.. it connects to the net (only if I leave the comp on) and updates the files. Not sure if it does a scan or not, but I know it does update files.

I scan every night before I disconnect.. then I scan disk and defrag every other night.

My computer seems to be running alot better now.

I had one virus get loose on my computer, it was sent to me from my sons computer. I only opened it because it was from him. I open no one elses attachment without first making sure it's clean.

Is your attachment clean, Guru? If so, I'll open it :D

pictures arrive just fine via email :)

velius-I don't look like this all the time.. this picture is posed. hair and make up carefully done..

I'm a complete mess in real life. Ask Lickerish, Juspar and my boyfriend. They will all tell you what I'm really like :D

Freaky is pretty - Lickerish is my dream.

I have a fire wall, and also have norton installed and running, no idea what the update is set to. I think I picked it up frm something I went looking for on purpose  Damn peer to peer file sharing.

Anyway, for some reason it's letting me log on this morning, Norton found nothing, I've just down loaded THe Cleaner. Thank you everyone for your help, especially my Licky darlin' for posting this.
