My mom has a computer with Windows XP on it. She uses AOL as her browser, but had Internet Explorer 6 on her computer as well. I use it when I'm at her house.

At the end of July, whenever my mom went to do a search on Ebay or went to www.Amerciangreetings.com, she received an IE script error message, even though she was using her aol browser.

She has e-mailed support at AOL, Compaq, and Microsoft, and they have all told her pretty much the same things to do, but many of their suggestions don't include Windows XP. Anyway, I tried updating her drivers, and updating IE6 for her, and she's still getting the error messages.

I went to ebay through the IE browser and also had an error message come up. She is at the end of her rope, as she is even more computer illiterate than I am. Can anyone please help here?

I'm stuck. There's a reason why I keep away from AOL.

Save her. Ween her off AOL's "browser" and onto IE6.

I'm new to Ebay too but I remember some special mention being made for users with the AOL browser. It needs some setting changed.

... but if you could post the text of the error message I might be able to make a better stab at it.

maybe AOL is using's IE rendering engine

in english, AOL is using bits and pieces of IE6 when it trys to draw a page.

what kind of script errors? there are a lot of different scripting languages, JAVA, ActiveX, ASPs etc. without knowing more about the error I can't give a lot.

though, from the hip:

try uninstalling AOL, running the IE6 updates, then re-installing, may not help, but it's the best I've got right now.

It says "Internet Explorer Script Error"

Line: 2
Character: 9
Error: invalid Character
Code: 0
URL: http://search.ebay.com/search/searc...lt&ht=1&SortProperty=MetaEndSort&query=really

Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?

Then whether I click "yes" or "no", it makes no difference.

I also get an error when I go to the site through IE's browser.

By the way, I already uninstalled and reinstalled AOL. that was one of the suggestions of support.

I think you actually have two problems here:

First, the ebay pge tht is generating the error message is doing something that IE6.0 doesn't like -- probably ********** related. That could be a result of IE6 not enabling ********** as a default.

Second, is the AOL browser and IE6 conflicting. I suspect that IE6 is trying to establish itself as the default browser and intruding into AOL's operation. I'm not sure how to set the default browser in Win XP, but you can stop IE from checking to see if it is the default in Internet Option on the Programs tab.

Shes running AOL 7? If not you should upgrade to it and that should fix the problem, though I think its a pretty big update on dial up.

I don't get an error on that page with IE5.5. I did "view source" and that page is mostly **********.

Do you hve the same problem from home with IE6 or is this just on your mother's computer?

If it's just on your mother's computer, then try downloading the ********** support plugin for IE6.

********** isn't available anymore from microsoft, the pulled it a couple of days ago. I use opera and sun's JVM. do you think sun's Java Virtual Machine might work?

Thanks for the advice, WH and everyone else. It is AOL 7.0.

I don't ever recall getting a script error message from my home computer when doing a search on ebay, but I also don't use AOL.

Ummm, call me really stupid, but where can I get the plugin you mentioned, WH?

IE 6 also has a built in repair utility. Don't know if it wwill fix the problem, but it can't hurt.

Open Control Panel
Open Add/Remove
Select Microsoft Internet Explorer
Select Repair Internet Explorer

Just tried the link in my XP Pro machine, works fine.

WH, do you know if AOL 7.0 uses mozilla or IE as it's default browser. or maybe the gecko underpinnings that might be trashing something in IE?

Miles, I already tried that, but there is no Microsoft Internet Explorer in the add/remove programs. I don't know why- that's when I went to reinstall IE6, thinking that maybe it would help- it ran some updates, but it's still not in her add/remove programs.

Thanks, Asendin- DLing it now.

"Disable script debugging" is already checked. Did you mean that it should be checked, or unchecked?

Nope, don't know.

Ok- I just finished DLIng Java VM- do I need to reboot, or should I just try to go to ebay again?

Yes, I just tried to go to the site again, both in aol 7 and IE6 and got the error message again. I'm ready to tear my hair out of my head!

Have you installed it? Most installation programs will tell you if you need to reboot. I suspect that you should reboot for it to load properly -- rebooting won't hurt anything either way.

im shocked IE6 generated that error, also be sure -
display a notification about every script error is unchecked

You might want to use the update featuer on XP.
It will examine the computer and display the lates security update and other patches. Some of thes can be very large.

I did have some of the same jave scripting errors also.

After I finish all the updates they where gone.

You might want to look for specific updates dealing with IE,
scripting, networking.

If all else fails. I would down load the Late's JVM from SUN.

Ok, i did that in IE6, but I rebooted and I'm still having the problem with it in AOL 7.0.

Nipplebyter, I did all of the windows updates earlier- it was one of the first things I did to try to fix her computer, and if you read the thread, I already downloaded Java VM.
