I need someone to come here now and fix it!!! I'm a bit irritated!

I can come help ya, but the travel cost would kill ya!

Seriously, Which version of Norton do you have? Does it include the Norton personal security firewall? If so, then the upgrade has locked it down and you need to configure it to allow you to browse out. I don't know how to do that off the top of my head and I don't have the software on my home comp, but Symantec.com will be able to tell you in their help files.

That was your first mistake. Norton takes over computers the way Republicans shrink the government.

Great...although I found out that their firewall does not like XP's firewall...didn't even know xp had one!

Yeah, it's like Al Gore and Karl Rove had to play nicely together....not a chance!

so, I'm beginning to think my computer is not salvageable!

It is, but you'll have to find a way to let the two play nicely and my own experience is just spotty enough that I can't be of much help. I have both on my system currently and weird things happen occasionally that probably originate in the playground squabble between the two "security systems."

I guess knocking their heads together won't help?

For the most part, if you let Norton win, all will be generally better.
I turned off my xp firewall...but things are not better yet!

I would open up the firewall configuration page and start looking for ways to adjust your access to web pages.

It has me locked out...can't access

Norton AV and Windows (Especially XP) do not go well together. I used to work for MS supporting windows. Generally, all we could suggest to people was to either:
A. Call Symantec for support.

If they tell you it's a Windows issue or the issue is still there after troubleshooting, Norton's may have tampered with your Internet Security settings in IE or in the Windows Registry. Microsoft may be able to wal;k you through Internet Explorer, but most times the end result is to uninstall Nortons and install another AV such as AVG Free or McAffee.

Not a good idea to mess with the firewall unless you have a reputable third party firewall. Personally, even though I no longer work for them, I have not found a better firewall than that with XP Service Pack 2.

Hope this helps...
Jason
