My computer decided to tank itself I figure. My drives seem okay but my operating system seems to have died and when I run scandisk to install the operating system it says I have a Invalid Long File Name that can not be corrected.

Anyone have any idea of how to fix this through DOS?

more info please.....................what exactly happened? and what appears on the screen?

THIS COULD BE WHY I HAVENT TALKED TO YOU IN TWO DAYS HUH?? WELL WHATEVER IT IS DAMNIT FIX IT!

I reinstalled American Online and went to reboot, then I got Windows could not boot error, restart your computer.

So I did... Goes to safemode without any indication of what the error is.

So I figure if I reinstall Windows, I should be on the way to recovery, but when it goes to install it does a Directory Structure test through scandisk and it gets a Long File Name Error and says that It cannot be fixed, unless under Windows, but I cant get into windows. Just wondering if there was any way to find the file thats causing the problem? or is there another way to install the OS without letting it run scandisk?

Guru says "FORMAT.....hope you have a good back-up".

Sounds pretty bad.....

When you install Windows from Dos, you can turn off every command you dont want it to do, including scandisk. You do it with a Setup /S or whatever the command is. I'm on 2000 so I don't remember what it is.
