bigrednz is having problems running scan disk on his computer.

The message he is getting is,

"Scan disk has restarted 10 times because Windows or another program has been writing to this drive. Quitting some running prgrams may enable Scan Disk to finsih sooner."

He has since run scan disk in safe mode and still keeps getting the same message.

Any ideas please?

hit ctl alt and delete

make sure everything that doesn't need to be running.. is off

Reboot computer...
repeatedly hit F8 until DOS prompt appears....

type:
cd..
scandisk/a

Hi!
I had that problem......did you do a "ctrl - Alt - Del" to see if there's any programs open, if so close what you don't need.
Well that worked for me, hope it works for you! Good luck!:)

Info:

What OS (Operating System) is he running?

Does he have any Adaptec CD Creator software installed on his system?

Does he have any anti-virus software installed on his system?

What is the exact error message he's getting?

If you can get these questions answered, I will be able to assist you better..

found this info

Scandisk and defrag
Programs running in the Background stop it.
Turn off screen saver.
Do Ctrl-Alt-Del and close all but explorer and try again.
Upon completion, suggest run defragment.

It can run in Safe Mode also.
Reboot and on startup hold the Control key [F8 if control does not work]
This will bring up the Boot menu
Arrow down [mouse does not work here] to 3. Safe Mode, hit enter
and you will boot to Safe Mode. [Yes it will look funny, very basic here]
[Screen saver should already be turned off] and run scandisk.
Upon completion you can run defragment also. It would be a good Idea as
you are already there.

Upon completion reboot to start you av and other programs

IN DOS
Scandisk can be run in dos also.
Defrag can not
Do the same as safe mode until you get to the startup menu.
Select 5. Command and hit enter.
and you will boot to the C:\ prompt.
Type in scandisk ,
looks like this
C:\scandisk
hit enter
when finish at the C:\ type win hit enter
or for a faster reboot do a Ctrl-Alt-Delete

Thanks for the replies. :)

OS is Windows 98 SE.

Screen saver off.
Running in safe made to try and do scan disk.
No other programs running
No Adaptec CD Creator software
Norton Gold for anti virus

Exact message,"Scan disk has restarted 10 times because Windows or another program has been writing to this drive. Quitting some running prgrams may enable Scan Disk to finish sooner."

Keeps doing it, tried about five or six times now.

bigrednz says nice tits, freaky. :D

Yip everything turned off except explorer.

Hmmmm.. OK.. That is odd.. What seems to be happening is that there is some unaccounted for program running in the background that's writing data to the hard disk.. Could be a virus (not likely) or a spyware program.. Or.. It could simply be a messed up registry value.. Can he back-up the data that's currently on his computer? Because if he can, I would suggest reformatting and re-installing windows..

But one more thing before that.. Did his hard drive come with any diagnostic software? I know that Western Digital hard drives come with diagnostic software.. If he has anything like that, I'd encourage him to use the diskette to run diagnostics on his hard drive to make sure everything is in proper order..

I find that mine says that if I'm online at the same time that the scan starts. Go offline?

No reformatting is needed.

(Draco will be so proud of me. :D)

Bigredz.. my tits thank you.

Ok.. so nothing besides explorer running. Do you have adaware? If so.. run it and get rid of that crap. You might have a spyware running.

Make sure you aren't connected to the net.

Our computers are networked.
Surely that wouldn't cause a problem?

Thanks for all your help, people's.
(And for the link, freaky :) )

He ran ad aware resterday, all clean.
No spyware.
No diagnostic software.

Im going to go offline, shut down and
retry for him just in case it is the network
causing a problem.
LOL Just pulled the plug on the networking
and will try that.

not unusual

This is an irritating problem with Win98.

Do the control/alt/del and shut down everything except "systray" and "explorer". (you HAVE to have them running) (also you may have to "end task" on a few programs more than once to get them to shut down). Disable antivirus if it is still showing in task bar or right click it and shut down, and then run the sacn disk and defrag.

You may want to run msconfig too. (click: start/run/type msconfig). Then look at start-up menu and delete all programs that have added themselves to your start menu. (NOT your antivirus).

This will not affect the use of these programs; it just won't load them at startup every time you boot.
