I would like to know if I can use a USB Jump Drive between Windows 98ME and Windows xp.

My Laptop has Windows 98, a Floppy and a CD Reader as well as a USB Port. I like to use the Laptop for my writing because it will go anywhere I go, hence is there when the mood or need for writing strikes. Unfortunately my DeskTop, which runs Windows xp does not have a Floppy Drive. (Yes I know I can install a Floppy Drive in about ten minutes I just don't really see the need for one if I can use a Jump Drive.)

Any help is appreciated.

Don't see any problems, especially if you're going from the older to the newer. If you do something on the Desk Top and transfer it to the laptop, a program upgrade may not be on the laptop and hinder progress.

Thanks for the input. I wanted a little more info before I went out and spent the money on a Jump Drive. (Granted it's not a lot of money but it's still money I could be spending on something else.)

The only potential problem I can see is if the Jump drive has to be formatted through Windows before it can be used. If it does require formatting, always format from the Win98 machine rather than the WinXP machie.

WinXP can use FAT32 (Win98'sdefault fromat) drives, but Win98 can't use NTFS (WinXP's default format) drives.

Other than that caveat, I don't see any problems with transfering data from one system to the other.

I've used a usb jumpdrive for years to transport work and writing.... it's no problem.. Most jump drives come with drivers for 98 Me and now xp... upgraded drivers are easy to get from the manufacturer onb line....

I even use mine on Linux systems....

Thanks all, this may be the way for me to go then. I'll have to hit some stores tomorrow and see what they have available. I'll let you know how this works out.
