OK, so I notice my computer's been running kinda slow lately, so I'm looking at deleting unimportant shit. Finally, I come to my "Temporary Internet Files" folders (I have two concurrent hard drives) and find that together, they house nearly 4100 files and weigh in at a whopping 67.2 MB.

No big deal, I figured; I'd just use the Delete Temporary Files tab on my Internet Explorer and zonk them all at once. Well, I did, and they're all still there. Or at least that's what my computer says: I'm looking at the folders right now with Windows Explorer and they're all empty.

Of course, I could just wipe out all the subfolders with the random character combination names like "C12fs5uj", but then I get a prompt that says they're system folders, and I'm scared that I'll somehow delete something important by getting rid of this goofy shit.

So what should I do? I can't delete the files one by one because they're not showing up. Should I just go ahead and obliterate the dummy folders, or will that cock up my hard drive? Or is there a way to get the files to appear? Or a different way to clean out all this shit entirely?

Internet Sweeper, free on Tucows.com , is a handy utility for cleaning things up.

I routinely delete the contents of all of my temporary files. I just don't like all of that crap accumulating on my drive. I'm assuming that you regularly defrag your drives and that you clean out your registry from time to time.

Personally, I reformat the hard drive in which WinXP is located at least once per year --- but I understand that a lot of people don't like to do that.

Ok, first, I'm assuming you emptied the trash, right?

Next, set your browsers to delete content after like 2 days time, so it never gets that full again.

Then, go through and do a scan disk and a disk defrag, to fix any errors which can also slow you down.

Now, once that is all done, shut it down, and restart, and then check to see if those files are gone yet or not.

Also, get a program like Ad-Aware, which will nook any of the peeper progs some websites automatically dl onto your cpu.

Hope that helps a bit.

You can delete everything with in
Drive:\Documents and Settings\*user-name*\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
directory there are no adverse effects that I'm aware off. You can also clean up your temp files
Drive:\Documents and Settings\*user-name*\Local Settings\Temp
I assume you use Win XP if you use 98 then it will be in windows directory. XP has a Disk Clean up thing but it never works right...

Here is my clean up bat file

Code:
del Cookies\*.txt
CD C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings
rd Temp /s /q
md Temp
rd "Temporary Internet Files" /s /q
cd C:\recycler
del *.* /y
CD D:\recycler
del *.* /y
CD E:\recycler
del *.* /y

Any software that you need to get your drives into shape can probably be found on KaZaA tonight!

I use Norton Utilities 2003 (yoinked from KaZaA) weekly ...
As long as you have a good Anti virus program, with up to date definition files --- KaZaA is harmless.

In fact the XP pro corporate edition that I'm using to type this came off KaZaA ...

I have Windows 98, and I regularly run disk scanners and defraggers.

I thought Disk Scan and IE's own Delete Temporary Files function would take care of them, too.

Here's a screen shot that I hope will illustrate. You can plainly see that the folder appears empty — not even the subfolders are listed. But the Properties box clearly says that there's 3600+ files comprising 44 MB contained therein.

don't even worry about it. Folder it self can not be deleted everything with in it can be. There is one or two .dat files that can not be deleted. After you done deleting it go to IE tool and delete from there. This way any cache info will be removed from them .dat files

Often/sometimes Windows Explorer will not immediately update its status after files are deleted in some other program (or even another instance of Explorer) - but if you go to the folder and press the 'F5' key it should update it. Also, when you reboot it should show the updated status.

Don't *ever* empty your trash. It will empty itself before it takes up too much of your disk space. And, if you don't fuck with it, that pic of Monica and Bill that you accidentally deleted two days ago will still be in there.

Only omeone like you would get off on shit like that

Ad Aware is seriously outdated.
Actually there's a brand new version of it to download, so it's not outdated. But it have been, I agree on that.

Nope.

So I went to the MS-DOS prompt, as I'm a cagey veteran with DOS, opened each folder and "del *.*"-ed the whole she-bang. Now the folders are down to a more manageable 150 files and 14.3 MB. I still don't know where the 150 files are hiding, but at least I excised 50+ megabytes of worthless shit from my system.
