.ART files are a proprietary AOL image format. There is an add-on for IE that provides .ART support for IE5 and up available at the MS website.

If you need to edit an image in .ART format, open it in IE after you install the ART support and clik File->Save As and save it as a BMP file. Once it's saved as a BMP file you can edit it and convert it to JPeg or GIF format with most image editors.

I don't know of any image editing software that can handle .ART images directly, although there must be one someplace.

IrFanview is indeed a very versatile image editor and manager, but it does NOT (as of the version I downloaded a couple of months ago) support ART format.

PaintShop Pro from www.jasc.com is another programthat supports almost every imaginable format but as far as I know, it doesn't support ART format either -- at least not up through version 7.0 it doesn't. The current version might.
