I received notice today that people commented on a deleted story of mine. How is that possible? When I can't see the deleted story. Are my deleted stories not really deleted?

What times are showing in the feed? And when did you delete the stories? It's conceivable there's a timing disconnect, but on face value it does seem odd.

My understanding is a deleted story gets purged from the database completely, whereas a story that's been reported and pulled back for review is "taken down" and can be reinstated.

Comments sit in the ether for a long time when they aren't made by people on the greenlist. So anonymous comments especially will get logged and then wait for a day or more before they escape moderation. So the comments will have been OKed pending review, and then you get a message that they escaped purgatory down the line. Possible that you still get that message even if the whole story has gone down the drain.

You can see the edges of this, if you go to:
https://www.literotica.com/c/science-fiction-fantasy/comments

You'll see a list of works that have had comments logged recently. But often that number will be higher than the number of visible comments. The extra comments have been logged, but haven't escaped purgatory yet. As the author, you get the message when the comment escapes, but you can see that the comment has been sent by looking at the "more recent comments" page.

Also, if a comment gets deleted your notification for it will change to say that someone has left a comment on your deleted work.
